  1. SCUDERI SPLIT CYCLE ENGINE Presented By MR. AMEYA V. DATRANGE Guided By PROF. V. K. PATIL A SEMINAR ON Department of MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, K.K.W.I.E.E.R.

  2. INTRODUCTION The Scuderi Split-Cycle Engine was originally conceived by Mr. Carmelo J. Scuderi. The basic concept of the Scuderi Engine is to divide the four strokes of a standard engine over a paired combination of one compression cylinder and one power (or expansion) cylinder.

  3. MOVING ENGINE TECHNOLOGY • Today’s engines operate at only 33% efficiency. This means that only 1/3 of the energy in each gallon of fuel is used - the rest is lost through friction and heat. • THE HEART OF THE ENGINE NEEDS TO CHANGE.

  5. CONCEPT OF DESIGN The Scuderi Split-Cycle Engine changes the heart of the conventional engine by dividing (or splitting) the four strokes of the Otto cycle over a paired combination of one compression cylinder and one power cylinder. Gas is compressed in the compression cylinder and transferred to the power cylinder through a gas passage.

  6. INHERENT ADVANTAGES The design of each cylinder can be independently optimized to perform the separate and distinct tasks of compression and power. Provides more flexibility in how engines are built.

  10. RELEVANT FACTS Faster Burn Rate. Firing After Top Dead Center Is Counter-Intuitive to Engine Design. Lower NOx Emissions- Means It Can Run Leaner and Gain Efficiency. Built-In Supercharging- Special Benefits for Aircraft Applications.

  11. IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY Fuel efficiency improvements of 15% - 30% initially with further improvements possible. Potential reduction of NOx emissions of 50% - 80%. Lower average operating engine speed reduces engine wear and tear. Design Flexibility-more controllable parameters available for achieving enhanced or customized performance.

  12. IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY Compatibility with existing engine. manufacturing processes and tooling. High torque at low RPM means higher power at lower engine speeds. Same total engine size (number of cylinders and displacement) as comparable conventional internal combustion engines. The need for turbochargers is eliminated.

  13. IMPACT ON DIESEL ENGINE Scuderi Split-Cycle Technology not only improves the performance of the engine but reduces the complexity and cost of the engine, the impact is staggering. It drastically reduces the cost of diesel systems by dramatically reducing three of the most expensive and complex parts of a diesel system: turbocharging, injectors, and exhaust treatment.

  14. AFFECTING GLOBAL ISSUES Toxic Emissions- Combustion engines cause air pollution by producing exhaust gases. Reduction in emissions is the only solution for it.

  15. AFFECTING GLOBAL ISSUES Global Warming- Besides NOx, the extra CO2 leads to violent weather patterns and the melting of the polar icecaps. The only way to reduce CO2 emissions is to burn less fuel by using more efficient engines.

  16. AFFECTING GLOBAL ISSUES Dependency on Foreign Oil- Although alternative sources of oil are being developed, the US will have no choice but to turn to OPEC nations to satisfy energy needs for the foreseeable future.

  17. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING A 10% efficiency improvement in vehicle performance would save over $10 billion and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 140 million tons per year. A 20% efficiency improvement could reduce foreign oil used today by 1/3.

  18. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING Environmentalists claim that increasing the average vehicle mileage to 40 mpg would save more oil than we get from Persian Gulf imports, the Artic Wildlife Refuge and California offshore drilling combined. The Scuderi Split-Cycle Engine can provide immediate and cost-effective solutions.
