  3. Welcome to Photo Chop! During the next few lessons we will be exploring… • Surrealism • The art of collage • Painting VS Technology Image: http://ubuntudigest.blogspot.co.nz/2010/05/polaroid-frame-effect-using-gimp.html http://knightranger.deviantart.com/art/Polaroid-Frame-105135700 http://pixdaus.com

  4. Let’s start this lesson by exploring “Surrealism”. Image: http://www.zuzafun.com/samy-charnine-surrealism

  5. What is Surrealism? And who are the Surrealists? At the time many styles of painting were being created, from landscape painting to portrait painting and still life painting This group of artists and writers known as the Surrealists, decided they wanted to create their own style of painting Surrealism started in the 1920’s when a group of artists and writers were thinking about new ways of creating art Image: http://echostains.wordpress.com/2009/10/09/angels-of-anarchy-women-surrealists-exhibition-2/ http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/cezanne/sl/ http://nelseverydaypainting.blogspot.co.nz/2011/01/palette-knife-still-life.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Paul_C%C3%A9zanne_115.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tsar_nikolai.jpg

  6. Surrealists became interested in creating paintings that were generally based on their dreams. Some dreams were strange and un-real but the Surrealists liked the idea of creating paintings of places people have never seen or experienced. 7. Their paintings were filled with familiar objects which were painted to look strange or mysterious. Surrealists would often think about the size of familiar objects and change them. This would help them create paintings of places out of this world. 8. They thought that their paintings might stir up feelings in the back of peoples minds Surrealists hoped their odd paintings would make people look at things in a different way and change the way they felt about the world they lived in. 9. Over the years many artists decided to make art this way, from painters to photographers and sculptors. Image: http://search.it.online.fr/BIGart/?p=105

  10. Surrealism inspired photographers to think about how they could use photographs in an interesting way Image: http://bells1.blogspot.co.nz/2011/03/surrealism-in-photography.html http://www.listal.com/list/photographers-surrealists

  11. Artists working in sculpture also became inspired by Surrealism, bringing imagination and fantasy to life Image: http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/beautifully-surreal-sculptures http://www.art.com/products/p1631811061-sa-i4190593/wendy-connett-entrance-to-las-pozas-the-pools-surrealist-sculpture-garden-and-architecture.htm http://neosurrealism.artdigitaldesign.com/modern-artists/?images/midsize/fine-art/woman-in-bed.jpg

  12. Surrealism continues to inspire many painters today Artworks are by artist Vladimir Kush considered as one of the best surrealist artists alive Image: http://www.sprayblog.net/2010/06/surrealistic-paintings-by-vladimir-kush/ http://www.spiritofspider.com/2011/11/vladimir-kush-metaphorical-surrealism/

  13. As we have seen, Surrealism can be an interesting way to create art… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…

  14. What have we learnt so far? Surrealism • started from a group of artists and writers who wanted to create art in a new and different way • artworks are generally based on dreams, imagination and fantasy. Sometimes they use familiar objects and make them appear strange or mysterious • offered people a chance to look at things in a different way and change how we felt about the world we live in • has influenced many artists to think about how they make art. From painters to photographers and sculptors.

  15. In the next lesson we will explore “The Art of Collage”. End of lesson
