Understanding Yoga • First to begin yoga, one has to understand that it is a state of mind, not just a fitness routine. • Yoga is about breath, pose, and control. • One must breathe through each pose and have the control to hold each pose to flow into the next. • Yoga is about balance, breathing, and relaxation. • Basically yoga is stretching. But by using the poses and one’s breath the stretching is deepened and relaxing. • Now lets learn!
Basic Yoga Poses • Mountain pose: This pose is used for deep breathing and usually the beginning of a yoga exercise. Downward Facing Dog: This is a great stretch for the whole body and it is one of the most popular yoga poses. Cobra (or up dog): This is the opposite of down dog and it a great stretch for the back and abdominal
The Yoga Flow • There are many different types of yoga, but the main idea in each is to match your breathing to the movement. • For example, when moving into the next move one must breathe. Step into down dog inhale, move into plank and exhale. This can be demonstrated in the picture below. When moving from position to position you must control your body and your breathing.
Anyone Can Do it! • Yoga can seem intimidating at first but it is an exercise that anyone can participate in. • The stretching, poses, breathing, and meditation of yoga can be customized to any level. Beginners and advanced yogis learn from their body what their limitations are and what works for their body. • Yoga is a mindset. The breathing and poses relax the body and the meditation relaxes the mind. It is said that the soul can be awakened by yoga. • Now that you understand the practice of yoga, the poses, and the breathing you can go ahead and join a class or practice at home. There are books, dvds, and youtube channels dedicated to teaching yoga. I encourage you to check it out. • Namaste!
