In September 2012, the Alvarez family issued an urgent S.O.S from the Straits of Magellan in Chile, pinpointed at 34°N, 120°W. Bottles recovered from the beach provided key clues about their surroundings. Evidence from volcanic origins, dark beaches, and mountainous landscapes emerged. Unique plant life, including Scalesia pollen and various cacti, suggested a diverse ecosystem. Animal remains revealed the presence of marine iguanas and Darwin’s finches. An important clue indicated their precise location near the Equator. This discovery offers significant insights into their plight.

Clue #1: Landforms 1. Bottle analysis: • Bottle looked as though it had came from a volcano or a beach near South America. 2. Recovered text The beach is dark and gray not very pretty like the the beaches at home. There are mountains and a volcano in the distance. There is smoke coming out the top.
Clue #2 Plant Life • Bottle analysis • Pollen from Scalesia was found in the bottle. • Spines from several cacti were in there also. • There were also orchid petals in there.
Clue #2 continued • Recovered text • We have eaten fruits. There are many beautiful flowers. It is somewhat rainy. • Letter Analysis • There was a guava juice stain on the letter.
Clue #3 Animal Life • Bottle Analysis Marine Iguana claws were found in the bottle. There was feathers from a tropical water penguin and Darwin’s finch. • Recovered Text There are huge tortoises, large fishing birds, and red and brown footed boobies. Bat droppings were found on the letter.
