Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) have long been used to synchronize computers with portable devices, providing access to emails, internet, and calendars. With the rise of smartphones, which combine PDA functionality with mobile phone capabilities, PDAs have seen decreased popularity. Smartphones are now often subsidized, making them more accessible and practical for users. This shift has impacted the notebook market as many tasks can be efficiently performed on smartphones. PDA’s • PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant. • PDA’s have been in use for many years and they are generally used to synchronize a person’s computer with an ultra portable device. • PDA’s provide people with access to many functions of a computer, such as email, Internet access, and their personal calendar.

  3. Smart Phones • Smartphones offer the functionality of a PDA combined with a wireless phone.

  4. Cost • Smartphones have become more popular than PDA’s in many markets since the cost of the phone is subsidized when bundled with a contract. • Using a smartphone in place of a PDA allows the owner to carry one less device, assuming he/she would carry a phone in addition to a PDA.

  5. Affect on Notebooks • The advent of smartphones has lead to a decline in the notebook market since many people have discovered they can perform many routine tasks, such as email and Internet surfing, using a smartphone.

  6. Understanding • Be sure to familiarize yourself with different styles of smartphones and PDA’s and the features that affect their cost. • Reading reviews of products is an excellent method of researching before making purchasing decisions.
