  1. What is an ISA? It is a controlled assessment worth 25% - it is the coursework aspect of your course

Stages of the ISA • Planning and research – all your information needs to be written on the candidate research form. • Reporting on the planning – this will be a 45 minutes test with a total mark of 20. You will need to come up with your results table at the end of this. • Practical work – this can be done individually or in small groups • Processing data – this is where you do your calculations and graphs • Analysing results – This is another test paper which will last 50 minutes and will give students a mark out of 30.

  4. Investigate • You must investigate a factor that may affect the mass deposited on the negative electrode during electrolysis.

  5. What do we know about what can affect electrolysis? electrolysis How could we measure these?!

  6. Context • You are working for a watch company that wants to plate their watches in copper. They want to find a way to do this as quickly as possible to speed up their manufacturing process.

  7. Hypothesis You need to develop your own hypothesis to investigate a factor that may affect the mass deposited on the negative electrode during electrolysis. You will need to produce your own hypothesis and research a plan.

  8. Background Research. You will need to reference (name) two sources that you used for your research. One of these sources must be a method. Where could we find information to help us with this problem? Possible search questions: • Factors affecting the rate of electrolysis. • Method for testing the rate of electrolysis.

  9. Background Research. These could be found in: • Textbook (Write the title of the book and the author(s)) • The internet. You need the full web address such as…. www.karlwalker/myfavourite/teacher You will need to write up your research on the ‘candidate research form’. You can gather the information in your books and then complete the form neatly. Extension: which of the two sources was the most useful and why

  12. Background Research – this needs to be written in your books You must explain which one of your sources of information is the most useful. You must comment on both, such as… Source 1 gave me a complete method of what to do. Source 2 gave me information about how solar cells work and what affects how much voltage they make.

  13. From your background research you need to decide…. • How are you going to investigate the hypothesis? • What is your method going to be? • What equipment will you need? • What are your variables? • How are you going to make your test fair? • Are there any risks to your method?

Double check – 25 mins • You have completed your sheet with hypothesis, sources of information and method on. • Can you say what a preliminary investigation is? • Can you explain your method with an equipment List • Name you variables : Independent Variable, Dependent variables and Control Variables • How will you make this a fair test • Risk associated with the practical • Why we might compare our results once completed • Preliminary table for your data (practice) • You may be assessed on your use of good English
