  2. NCAA Designated Hitter Rule

  3. Rule 7(2)(a) Original 10 Player Line-up Card • DH must be designated before the game. • Must be included in the lineup card. DH Bats For: • Starting pitcher designated before game starts. • All subsequent pitchers included in lineup cards. • DH can bat in any position in the lineup. • Once in a position cannot be changed.

  4. Rule 7(2)(b) Original 9 Player Line-up Card DH hitting for pitcher is not mandatory. However, if pitcher is in the batting lineup as listed here. He Automatically • Becomes the DH and is • Considered two players. • Both P/DH, and • Can be substituted as both. Note: Pitcher is NOT considered a defensive position for substitution purposes.

  5. Rule 7(2)(c)(1) Manager comes to you and tells you that his pitcher, Hipp (original pitcher), will move to right field and Samuels will now come in to pitch. He also tells you that Johnson will now go into the DH spot. Samuels, T. 1 Note: The DH is terminated because the pitcher moved to a defensive position, so Johnson cannot enter the game. Hipp, C. If the manager only gives you those changes, the new pitcher bats in the DH spot. If he makes more than one change (not including the pitcher going to RF) then he must tell you where he is placing them in the order. This can only be done on defense.

  6. Rule 7(2)(c)(1) Same as previous slide except in addition to changes already given to you, the manager also tells you: Donaldson, M. 4 • Sharp is moving from center to left, • Kennedy is in to play center and will be hitting for Cresson, and Samuels, T. 1 • Donaldson is going to 2nd Base and will be hitting for Smith, the left fielder. Hipp, C. Since the manager made at least two changes on defense, in addition to the pitcher going to right field, he must tell you who each of them are replacing in the lineup, so you can put them in the proper batting order. 7 Kennedy, D. 8

  7. Rule 7(2)(c)(1)(A.R.2) 10 Player Line-up Manager tells you that his DH (Brown) is going into the game to play 1st base. Hipp, C. 1 3 • DH is terminated. • If the pitcher remains in the game, he assumes the batting position of the removed defensive player.

  8. Rule 7(2)(c)(1)(A.R.2) 10 Player Line-up Bonner, H. 8 Same as previous slide, but Manager also tells you that Bonneris going in to play center field and hit for Smith, Sharp is going from center to left and Donaldson is coming in for Bonds at 3rd base. Hipp, C. 1 3 Donaldson, M. Note: Make obvious changes first. The others will fall in place. 7 Manager could put the subs in the batting order wherever he wants.

  9. Rule 7(2)(c)(2)(a) 10 Player Line-up Game pitcher (Hipp) is replaced as the pitcher. Replaced pitcher (Hipp), while on offense: Hipp, C. • Can replace DH (Brown) and bat for him. • If so, he can’t re-enter in any other capacity. • He cannot return to pitch but, • He can pinch hit or run for DH only. Johnson, C.

  14. Rule 7(2)(c)(4) 9 Player Line-up When P/DH (Brown), starting or subsequent, is replaced as DH: • He can remain as the pitcher. Bonner, H. DH However, • P/DH (Brown) cannot subsequently be moved to a defensive position, and • P/DH (Brown) cannot return as DH. Brown, T. 1

  15. When P/DH is replaced as the pitcher : • That P/DH can remain as DH and bat in that spot only. Rule 7(2)(c)(5)(a) 9 Player Line-up DH • If he remains as DH, neither he nor any subsequent DH can: • Return in any other capacity, i.e. • Pitcher • Defensive player, or • Pinch runner Bonner, H. 1

  16. While on defense, P/DH (Brown) can: • Be moved to a defensive position. • P/DH going to a defensive position does not change batting positions. • DH is terminated. • New pitcher (Bonner) bats in spot of replaced defensive player. Rule 7(2)(c)(5)(b) 9 Player Line-up 8 Bonner, H. 1

  17. Since P/DH is considered two positions, P/DH going to defensive position can return to pitch once. If P/DH was removed because of the second trip in an inning or the third free trip, the player can’t return to the mound. Remember: No one can ever change positions in the batting order.

Rule 7(2)(c)(8)&(9) 9 or 10 Player Line-up Pinch hitter (Johnson) bats for SS then enters the game to pitch: Donaldson, M. 6 DH can remain in the game and • Assume the position of the removed player, or Johnson, C. 1 • He can then be substituted (Donaldson)
