Considers the varied nature of rural livelihood systems in developing countries. • livelihood change, diversification and migration • interconnectedness of the global and the local in causing change in rural societies. • Explores the impact of different agents of change on livelihoods: • non-governmental organisations, • impact of modern biotechnology • effects of trade on livelihoods. • Draws primarily (though by no means exclusively) on evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa and India.
