Order of Operations. Allye Trusty October 29, 2011 6. Step 1: Parenthesis. Parenthesis always come first in your steps from 1 to 6. You always solve your parenthesis and the move on. If there are no parenthesis you move to Step 2. Step 2: Exponents.

  2. Step 1: Parenthesis • Parenthesis always come first in your steps from 1 to 6. • You always solve your parenthesis and the move on. If there are no parenthesis you move to Step 2.

  3. Step 2: Exponents • Exponents always come second in your steps from 1 to 6. • You always solve your exponents and the move on. If there are no exponents you move to Step 3.

  4. Step 3: Multiply or Divide • When you get to Step 3 you follow the direction multiply or divide, which ever one comes first going left to right.

  5. Step 4: Add or Subtract • When you get to Step 4 you follow the direction add or subtract, which ever one comes first going left to right.

  6. Example: • 3-4+3+(5-9)/2 • 3-4+3+14/2 • 3-4+3+7 • 1+3+7 • 4+7=11
