Beyond Blue… • Diagnosis of depression in people with intellectual disability • Increase direct support worker and GP awareness of depression in adults with intellectual disability • Provide a tool that will help direct support workers to gather information needed by the GP • Assist GPs in identification and treatment of depression

  3. Tasks • Complex project requires ‘wading through’ complex explanatory statements • Obtaining proxy consent sometimes difficult • Supervisor’s permission required in order to participate • Completion of detailed forms

  4. Collaboration • Liaising with GP sometimes problematic • Quality of interaction dependent upon previous relationship • Experiences of “Shooting the messenger” • Communicating with other staff members and professionals

  5. Practical issues • Getting clients to assessments • Staffing issues/backfill • Casual staff attending appointments • Assumptions that support workers have a detailed client history • Relationship with family/significant others

  6. The Report • Understanding it • Following through on recommendations • Service gaps - BIST waiting list - Lack of local services • Missing information • Knowledge of limitations of the study - Crisis point -What happens beyond the assessment?

  7. Value of Assessment? • Will other practitioners use information? • Will it help you argue for services/extra funding? • Is it difficult to follow up on recommendations? • Providing evidence for what support workers already know? • Case for diverting resources to particular areas?

  8. How do Direct Support Workers Benefit from Being in the Study? • Access to a service – at least for an assessment • Strategy for collecting information that will be needed by the GP • Information about their client with intellectual disability – increased understanding about behaviours, symptoms etc. • Acknowledgement of difficulties faced (?) • Recommendations about what can be done and potential services (?) • Others …..
