  1. 35.Water Filtration • EQ: How can we determine the safety and drinkability of our water supplies? • LT: I can describe the processes that can be used to convert unusable water to usable resources. • POU: I will make observations about rock type vs. permeability-I will draw and label the steps for water filtration-I will work with my group to review water filtration concepts.

  2. Welcome! Warm Up 3/20/14 • 1. Why would clay be found at the bottom of a well? • 2. Why are we running out of groundwater? Go to www.goo.gl/vta7d1 to record your response

  3. B. Sandstone C.Limestone A. Shale Which rock type is least permeable?

  4. B. Sandstone C.Limestone A. Shale Which rock type would I find in an Aquifer?

  5. Well Simulation http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/investigations/es1401/es1401page02.cfm?chapter_no=investigation • A well Simulation for the different types of rocks

  6. How long can an aquifer last?http://www.classzone.com/books/ml_science_share/vis_sim/ewm05_pg39_aquifer/ewm05_pg39_aquifer.html

  7. Demo: What happens when an aquifer runs dry? • Compare a moist spongetoa completely dry sponge

  8. Finish up – 10 minutes • Finish the conclusion questions for the lab • Tape into your Notebook on page 23 • 3. Work on uploading any missing assingments to your google drive folder

  9. Water Treatment Video

  10. Water Filtration Vocabulary 24 • Runoff – is precipitation that flows over land into streams and rivers. This water later enters oceans. • Filtration – process of passing water through a series of screens that allow water through but not large particles • Aeration – The water is mixed to liberate dissolved gases and to suspended particles in water column. • Coagulation – The process by which particles in a liquid clump together • Sedimentation – The water left undisturbed to allow the heavy clumps of particles and coagulants to settle out • Disinfection – The water is treated to destroy any remaining disease causing pathogens • Potable Water – drinkable water • Safe water: water that will not harm you if you come in contact with it.

  11. Water Filtration 24 Sketch picture from pg 106-107

  12. EPA Tour of Water Plant • EPA tour • http://www.epa.gov/ogwdw/watertreatmentplant/flash/index.html • **Skip Intro • ** (Right) Click on Video and select Zoom In • Press K to go to the Keyboard Short Cuts

  13. BANK • You will work in your lab groups to answer questions. • When I call time, flash me your Ipad with only the Letter of the answer choice • Some questions you will be silent (No Help from your group!) • Some I will let you come to a consensus
