Assumptions about human behavior by McGregorTheory X or Theory Y Theory X The traditional view of direction and control • The average human being has an inherent dislike of work and will avoid doing it if possible. • Most people must be coerced, controlled, directed, threatened with punishment to get them make adequate effort towards the achievement of organizational objectives. • Theaverage human being prefers to be directed, wishes to avoid responsibility, has relatively little ambition, wants security above all. • Management assumes employees are ambitious, self-motivated and enjoy mental and physical work duties. • Commitment to objectives is a function of the rewards associated with their achievement. • There is a positive view to the employee. Meaning that the employee is under a lot of less pressure than someone influenced by a theory X management style. Theory Y The integration of individual and organizational goals
