Bid to hold World Fair Russia’s leave gives Canada world fair bid • Canadian gov’t applied at the International Exhibits Bureau in Paris for rights to hold World Fair. • Moscow originally won the rights to host fair of 67; Dropped out when realized expenses involved. • Brussels in 1958 – Canada was given right to host fair. • Mayor Sarto Fournier created resolution to have Montreal host fair • John Diefenbaker endorsed bid in 1960. Federal gov’t pledged $20 million • 1962 – Montreal given hosting rights.

  3. Construction of the Expo From plans to finish • August 13, 1963 building of the expo began. Used earth from subway to build island. • Built two bridges leading to islands – Concordia Bridge, and Bridge of Isles. • Construction was finished in 1966, with exhibits finished in winter 1966-1967

  4. Pavilions Themes and Buildings • Theme of World Fair was “Man and his World” • 62 countries participated in pavilions • eight major national pavilions; five Canadian regional pavilions; one industrial, and one thematic.
