  1. SW – Week 4 Opening: Find instruction pages for test. Pages 2-6

SW • Test Directions • Sit in your own space • A separate table • A pillow with clipboard – see where I placed them – do not move them • Your table with dividers up between you and others around you. • All 50 letter answers go on scantron • 20 corrections written on test – must be done in a funny color – red, green, purple, blue, … • When finished, take your computer. • Finish paper and submit • Turn in Submission page and other materials to me today. • Work on Journal 4 – handout on front table.

  3. Revision and Submission • Prove you looked at and understood revision comments • Print out • Make changes • Explain what you changed • Prepare final • Make it something you would be proud to hand to a boss, recruiter, college as an example of your best work. • Read directions on submission sheet.

Articles • Assignment – due for tomorrow • Find 2 articles from 2 different sources on 1 subject • Subject is of your choosing – choose something of interest – you will be reading and writing about it • Vacation spot • A type of pet/animal you have • A career you are considering • Emmy’s • Artprize • Safety of astroturf • Cursive handwriting controversey • Need to have printed out and here tomorrow • Each needs to be a minimum of one page of text – but if really long – maybe print a part of article

  7. Pronoun Case He, She, They, I, We Him, Her, Them, Me, Us Who, Whom Our, My, Your, Her, His, Their Which one do you use when????? Complete back side. In Packet p. 21 – Lesson 1, Exercise 1 – Mark as correct or change.

Article Read: Active reading • Chunk your first article – find a way to divide into 3-4 parts • For each part • Mark 3-5 key ideas • On LEFT write a summary statement (use sticky note if you wish) • On RIGHT make a comment, write a question, make a connection, or write a thought about what is said. • Chunk your second article – find a way to divide into 3-4 parts • For each part • Mark 3-5 key ideas • If ideas are the same as first article – mark in yellow • If ideas are different from first article – mark in pink or orange • On LEFT write a summary statement for that part. • On RIGHT make a comment about how this part is similar or different from first article.

  13. Writing Instructions for Article This Article Report – is a discussion of your articles – the subject of the articles is secondary. Your focus is to compare and contrast the two articles and offer an assessment of the two articles. Learning Targets: I can evaluate the use, function, and purpose of articles clearly. I can explain my assessment of information with specifics and using proper documentation.

  14. Writing the Article Report • Introduction – • Introduce the subject, why it is of interest to you • Introduce the two articles by name, source and author. In the Intro you MUST write out full titles. Later, you may shorten them. • Sum up BRIEFLY what was addressed in the two articles. • Example • The two articles I read were both about a stroke. The first article was …. and came from …. The second article was … and came from ….. I wanted to learn more about strokes because my mom had a severe one about five years ago, so I looked for articles that addressed causes and treatments.

  15. Writing the First Body Paragraph • First Body Paragraph • Focus – Similarities in two articles. You should be saying, “In both articles,” a lot. • What information did they both have? • What was in common in terms of how they were written? • Need to come up with at least 3 similarities. • Example • “The two articles on stroke both defined ‘global aphasia.’ The one from the American Heart Association explained what aphasia meant in general terms and how it applied to the brain trauma of a stroke. The other was written by Karen, the stroke victim’s wife, and she focused on the type of aphasia her husband experienced that made it impossible for him to recognize most language, written or verbal. Both articles also explained ways to help people who suffer from aphasia. One of the techniques mentioned by both articles was about labeling things in the house and labeling pictures of familiar people. “ • Need to go on to at least one more comparison.

Writing the Second Body paragraph • 2nd Body Paragraph • Focus is on differences. • You should be saying things like • “In the first article, it says…. while in the second article the focus is more on ….” • The first article is mostly about …. where the second article is more about…” • “The first article has…; however, the other article…” • Use words like - • However, on the other hand, yet, while – to set up a contrast between the two articles. • DO NOT – talk all about one and then all about the other • Goal is to CONTRAST!

  17. 2nd Body • Example • “The first article discussed the different types of ruptures and blockages that can result in a stroke and the different parts of the brain impacted. The second article explained the main cause of the man’s stroke, a blood clot, but then went into how the wife knew her husband was in trouble.” • “The first article was a report by an objective source, the American Heart Association, just the facts, while the second article was a first person, very personal, account of what the couple went through.” • Need to go on to discuss at least 3 differences.

  18. Conclusion • For your conclusion – it will vary a lot based on your topic, articles, your prior knowledge, etc. • Goal in the conclusion is to share your thoughts on the articles – to show your critical thinking – and to offer some assessment of the articles in light of what you found or did not find. • To the right are some suggestions – discuss the ones that apply as a way of closing your report. • Which article was more useful and why? • If you were to continue to research the topic, what more would you like to know? • What had you hoped to find in the 2 articles that you did not? • How did what was presented fit with your own prior knowledge? • What conclusions can you come to based on your topic and these 2 articles? • If someone else wanted to research this same topic, which article or both or neither would you recommend?
