  2. Background • Increased incidence of gonorrhoea & chlamydia in the north west of England • Sex workers could be a major source of this infection • Sex workers were poor attenders to the health care services

  3. Aims & objectives • Raise awareness of STI’s among sex workers. • Provide a client focused service. • Hepatitis B vaccination • Contraceptive info/advice • Fast tracking into local GU clinics • Venereal Diseases Act applicable

  4. Practitioner • Minimum 5 years experience • Able to undertake an appropriate history • Provide a triage assessment of need • Contact tracing/partner notification where appropriate • Vaccination training

  5. Recruitment • ‘Health club’ section of local Manchester paper • VERY DIFFICULT! • Initial visit with owner/person in charge • Owner awareness • Private room availability • No disclosure

  6. Methodology • Eight massage parlours in the south of Manchester • Regular visits between Jan 2001 & June 2001 by experienced nurse practitioner . • Screening for STI offered to all women. • Hepatitis B vaccination and sexual health advice. • Evaluation of service via questionnaire

  7. Buccal swab for Syphilis & HIV Pharyngeal swab for GC & chlamydia Urine for chlamydia testing Self inserted HVS for GC & other non STI’s Other tests undertaken at practitioners discretion Testing

  8. Results • All women aged between 19-55 years • 94 women screened (138) • 10 HIV tests under taken. • 3 referred for termination of pregnancy • 7 ‘fast tracked’ into clinic for Dr review • 67.5% returned their questionnaires

  9. Discussion • Despite the incidence of STI’s amongst these women being lower than previously assumed, screening & treatment of this group is essential. • Alcohol and drugs were necessary for women to work. • Sexual health care was combined with primary care advice for this group.

  10. Conclusion • Sexual health advice should be provided together with primary care advice where appropriate • Screening and early treatment of this group will help control/prevent the spread of STI’s • 52 women wished this service to continue

  11. Everything you ever wanted to know about a sauna but were afraid to ask!! • 11am - 9pm (last service 8.30pm) • Most relevant person = Receptionist • £40 per 1/2 hour - 1st £40 to sauna - every other client = £25 to sauna (£15 to woman) • 1 hour session £70 - £20 to sauna (£50 to woman

  12. Specific services!! • £85 ‘Lesbian love scene’ - £35 to each woman - £15 to sauna • Anal sex - negotiable with woman (£25+) • Water sports/reverse water sports - negotiable with woman (£25 +) • Domination/submission - negotiable • Other activities!!? - negotiable
