DOs – how to get started… Plan Decide which DOs you can / intend to achieve depending on experience you expect to gain Discuss opportunities with your supervisor Keep records of relevant experience Aim to demonstrate that you have achieved a level of competence for selected DOs Set out Claim of Achievement (A / K / E / B) Summarise in a concise paragraph how you have achieved this level of competence Support your claim with evidence Reference to your Development Report Appendices to the DR.

  7. Development Objectives – ICE 3005 Students are encouraged to start working towards their DO achievement during their academic studies and particularly during vacation or placement experience in industry.

Each DO is given an achievement rating against the following scale: You and your mentor should use this scale primarily as a learning programme and should record your progression towards the achievement of each DO to identify the next stage of your development.

Development Reports - Purpose to prepare a library of ideas and methods to be used as a source of reference when repeating tasks in the future Aide-memoir for clever methods developed and learnt a career-development tool for use throughout your work to develop your report-writing skills to plan your future experience

Development Reports - Approach Report is for your own benefit – include items of interest to you Start by reviewing projects you have been involved in Vacation work etc Project work Compile a list / selection of important facts and supporting sketches, calculations, tables, forms, details and photographs etc.

  13. Development Reports - Appendices Sort out the most valuable items and discard less interesting / informative points Keep evidence of achievement of Development Objectives. If item is useful, summarise into a short method statement. Annotate photographs and drawings – show important details / why good / bad. Summarise calculations with main points and description of process and highlight important steps. Explain importance of / where information in tables / forms came from These items form appendices to your report and development objectives

Development Report Base report on evidence assembled for appendices Structure so that development objectives are addressed / highlighted Approx 1000-1200 words, but may vary (excluding appendices) Be concise – identify what is important and include that only Omit unnecessary padding Reports should not read like a diary

Development Report Review what learned What was useful, What problems occurred & how you resolved them Why it is interesting, Why it is important, What went really well, What you would do differently if you were to do it again, What have you made a note of so you don't make the same mistake in future. How well did you organise the project How did the team perform
