When you are searching for a firm or individual to perform this type of work, the terms ‘web designer’ and ‘web developer’ are often used interchangeably. However there are some key difference between these two jobs. WEB DESIGNERS For the most part, any interactions that you have with the person building your website will likely be with the Web Designer. They are focused on the front end, outward-facing part of the construction of your site. They’re spending their time working on the way that your customers engage and interact with your site, and are looking to create a positive user experience. They know the key principles of design and how to implement them on a website. These principles can be broadly categorised into: balance, emphasis, contrast, and consistency. The point of this is to ensure that your website flows and is visually appealing to users.

  2. WEB DEVELOPERS On the other hand, Web Developers are involved in the back end processes that take place for your website to operate. This involves utilising skills in coding and programming, in order to create a site that works in the way that fits the client's needs. Their focus in on how the site works, how it operates, and how the user or customer interacts with the site. Often they will have skills in a variety of coding languages, including HTML, CSS, Javascript, as well as scripts like PHP. HYBRID? It is becoming much more common to encounter people who actually represent a hybrid of the two roles. This is a result of the increasing popularity of freelance work, and therefore the need to be able to fulfill both roles for the client. There is also an inherent requirement for there to be some crossover between the two roles, particularly where designers will have some knowledge of what is required for website development. This is because a large part of their job is dependent on the developer. It is important to keep in mind the difference between these two roles, as it can make a big difference depending on the skills you required and therefore on the person that you hire.
