  3. Authentic Learning Defined • A classroom using authentic learning should look very different from the traditional classroom • Teacher/Instructor becomes a facilitator of learning Traditional Instruction Authentic Instruction

  4. Authentic Learning for Adults • Adult learners appreciate authentic learning • This makes the material relevant and applicable • Increases the likelihood that they will remember the material

Principles of Authentic , Multi-Level Instruction • Authentic learning • Multi-levels • Scaffolding • Higher order thinking • Inclusive, heterogeneous grouping • Integrated skill learning • Focus on meaning and function • Multi-modal • Building on strengths of the students • Fostering respect • Students’ interests, choices, power, and voice • Collaborative learning • Reflection • Growth and effort based collaboration

  6. Five Standards of Authentic Instruction • Higher order thinking • Depth of knowledge • Connectedness to the world • Substantive conversation • Social support to student achievement

Authentic Assessment • Aims to evaluate students’ abilities in real-world situations • Students learn authentic tasks instead of simply going through the test-taking process. • It measures students’ analytic skills, integration of learning, creativity, working collaboratively, and written and oral skills • Authentic assessment measures the learning process along with the finished product

Examples of Authentic Assessment • Case studies • Science experiments • Conduct social-science research • Write stories and reports • Read and interpret literature • Solve math problems that have real-world applications • Short investigations • Journal entries and reflective writing • Portfolios • Peer reviews

Conclusion • Authentic learning makes learning more meaningful to students by allowing them to learn through discovery, discussions, and connecting concepts and relationships that are relevant to the real-world. • Authentic learning is applicable to students of ALL ages • Adult learners are motivated by authentic learning because they can see how it is applicable to the real world
