Legislation & Regulations... • ACT No. 85 of 1993: Occupational Health and Safety Act • For Civil Technology we focus on Factories, Machines & Building Operations • The act is put in place to prevent accidents • The payment of workers compensation • Rehabilitation of injured workers • The main focus is the protection and interest of the workers! • Focus on the responsibilities, duties, actions and conditions etc. of the workers, employers, working environment & working conditions

  3. Personal Protection Equipment... • Head Gear... • Hard Hat • Safety Helmets • Gas Masks & Breathing Apparatus • Ear muffs • Safety Glasses • Dust Masks • Welding Masks • Safety Screens

  4. Personal Protective Equipment... • Body Protection... • Gloves • Flameproof Gauntlet-gloves • Flameproof Leggings • Flameproof Apron • Overalls • Protective clothing and equipment can be made of plastic, leather, asbestos, synthetic materials, etc. • These items should safeguard against infrared & ultra violet rays, heat, cold, chemicals, hard surfaces of any other means causing injuries.

  5. Personal Protection Equipment... • Protective footwear • Safety Boots • Safety Shoes • “Wellingtons” • Fireproof Boots

  6. What's the fuss? • Workers need to be motivated to wear safety clothing & equipment • It should be worn with ease. • It shouldn’t inhibit normal work procedures. • The workers MUST understand why it is important and necessary to wear the clothing and equipment. • The workers must be compelled to wear it by means of disciplinary action.

  7. It pays to be safe... Mistakes happen!!! You can get hurt!!
