  1. SF and Guidance Counselling • Solution Focused Skills help us to: • engage with clients • identify and agree needs and goals • move clients forwards • raise client self-awareness.

  2. Definition An outcome oriented, competence-based approach which helps to achieve clients’ preferred outcomes by evoking and co-constructing solutions to problems.

  3. Problem Focused Language Asthma-related words produced effects on brain and lung function. Talk about age-related decline to the elderly led to worse mobility andintellectual skills.  Be careful what you talk about, you or your clients might get more of it!

  4. What is Solution Focused? Problem Talk Explore problems Fix what’s wrong Blame-storm Defensive Ask why questions Solution Talk Be curious with clients Find out what works Goal set Co-operative Ask how questions

  5. Key Ideas • Capitalise strengths and manage around • weaknesses. • Look for ‘sustainable’ signature solutions. • Work with the person, not the problem. • Do more asking than telling.

  6. Key Ideas • Small change can lead to big changes • If it works keep doing it, or find ways of • doing it better • Study success • If it doesn’t work do something different.

  7. Destabilise Certainties • disrupt or sabotage rigid problem patterns by • highlighting provisional and subjective qualities • of clients’ ‘ truths’ • the value of ‘maybe, maybe not’ • change vicious circles to virtuous cycles • all ‘problems’ are constantly changing

  8. Find Exceptions • Exceptions are times when a person is • managing a problem - situation better. • Have you handled a similar situation before? • What did you do then? • Could you do any of that now? • What needs to happen for that to • happen?

  9. Miracle Question Imagine you woke up tomorrow and you found that you had overcome this difficulty/ were beginning to deal with things better, how would you know? What would be the first sign for you that this had happened? What else? Has any of this happened recently?

  10. Scaling 0 10 • Work with the space between the numbers • Measure progress • Instil hope • Build confidence • Increase motivation • Identify past solutions / resources • On a scale of 0-10, with 10 representing the best it can be and 0 the worst, where would you say you are today?

  11. Finding Solution Island Curiosity Unique Strategies Small Steps Scaling for success Exceptions Sustainable Solutions Person not the problem Doing what works Build on Strengths Hope

  12. Ending Give positive feedback Summarise achievements Link to goals Agree task
