  1. OVLIVNĚNÍ VODNÍCH TOKŮ SILNIČNÍM OKRUHEM KOLEM PRAHY Jana Nábělková, Dana Komínková, Gabriela Šťastná, Jakub Jirák 30.9 – 1.10.2010 Velké Bílovice Městské vody 2010

  2. Watercourses in urban areas • road traffic – important role within anthropogenic activities • road/highway runoff and air contamination (emissions from vehicle exhausts) • pollutants: ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, toxic metals, PAHs • increase of natural discharges of road/highway runoff • modification of aquatic environment in chemical, morphological as well as biological parameters, deterioration of water quality • evaluation of impact of highway runoff on small urban streams ordered by the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic • requirement: two sampling campaigns – rain event and dry weather • three urban streams, sampling above and below impact • chemical quality, morphological status and quality of benthic communities

  3. Popis zájmového území čtyřproudá komunikace – pražský okruh napojení na D11 (Hradec Králové) a R10 (Mladá Boleslav) Průměrné zatížení: 25 tisíc aut za den

  4. Popis zájmového území délka:2.2 km povodí: 4 km2 průměrný průtok:0.02 m3.s-1 C-A C-B Chvalka

  5. Popis zájmového území délka:6.8 km povodí: 11 km2 průměrný průtok: 0.02 m3.s-1 S-A S-B Svépravický potok

  6. Popis zájmového území R-B Rokytka R-A délka:36.2 km povodí: 134.85 km2 průměrný průtok: 0.3-0.4 m3.s-1

  7. Popis zájmového území C-0 C-A C-B S-A Chvalka X S-0 S-B Svépravický potok R-B R-A Rokytka R-0

  8. Monitored indicators • basic chemical indicators of water quality: pH, electrolytic conductivity, temperature, DO, NH4+-N, NO3--N, BOD5, COD, total P, SS • specific pollutants associated with the road traffic: trace metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) and PAH (15 componds) • water • sediment and soil samples (TOC) • Evaluation of results water: Czech standard CSN 757221 I. class – clean water II. class – slightly polluted III. class – polluted IV. class – strongly polluted V. class – heavily polluted sediment: USEPA Toxicity Reference Values (TRV) soil: Decree No. 13 of the Ministry of the Environment of CR (1994)

  9. Basic chemical quality of water • evident anthropogenic impact • all sampling sites strongly or heavily polluted • the worst: the Rokytka creek - BOD, COD, total P and NH4+-N • no evident deterioration in B profiles • no significant difference between wet and dry weather flow

  10. Specific pollutants in water • PAHs and metals – 1st class (clean water) in all sampling sites • no differences between A and B sampling sites • expectation: - increased concentrations in water during rain events - the most significant increase occurs in profiles below highway runoff discharges did not confirmed

  11. Specific pollutants in solid phase - PAHs • values exceeding TRV (esp. HMW PAHs)  danger and irreversible changes in aquatic organisms communities • lower concentrations in soil sample - non-point-source pollution from highway not confirmed • no evident relation between TOC and PAH in sediment • the Chvalka c. (dry weather), the Svepravicky c. (both campaigns): increase of PAHs in B profiles compared to A • higher concentrations in C-0 than in C-B • building-up area in the surrounding of S-B ?? different causes of increased PAHs than highway runoff ??

  12. Specific pollutants in solid phase – toxic metals • no definite evidence of higher load in sampling sites affected by highway runoff • exception: the Rokytka creek - higher Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg and Ni below discharge

  13. Specific pollutants in solid phase – toxic metals • dangerous concentration of Hg, Cu, Ni and Zn - all sites, the Rokytka c. also Cd, Cr and Pb • soil sample – less concentrations with no risk

  14. Specific pollutants in solid phase – toxic metals • Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and partly Hg positive correlation with TOC

  15. no obvious deterioration of water quality in sampling sites directly impacted by highway runoff • studied creeks can be characterized as strongly or heavily polluted based on basic chemical analyses of water quality also in sampling sites upstream • no significant difference between rain event and dry weather flow water quality observed • sediments of the studied creeks are polluted by PAHs and toxic metals, but no demonstrable direct relation with the highway runofffound out • confirmed association of some metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and partly Hg) with OM content in sediment, but not confirmed for PAHs • An unclarity still exists in binding behavior of specific pollutants in sediment, a lot of different factors of the aquatic environment of small urban streams play an important role within that the highway runoff impact takes less significant part for this specific case.
