  4. Pennsylvania • King Charles II of England had a large loan with Penn. King Charles settled by granting Penn a large area west and south of New Jersey on March 4, 1681. Penn called the area Sylvania (Latin for woods), which Charles changed to Pennsylvania in honor of Penn.

  5. Philadelphia • “The City of Brotherly Love” • 2nd Largest city in the colonies • 1st city to have street lights for safety • Declaration of Independence and Constitution were drafted here • Original nations capitol
