  1. Evidence and Convection Currents

  2. Convection Currents and the Mantle • There are things called convection currents in the mantle. • Convection currents in the mantle help the continents to move!

  3. Heat is always transferred from a warmer substance to a cooler substance

  4. Density • Density: • the amount of anything in a certain space • the quantity of a matter in a given area. • Less dense WARM liquid- • molecules that are not close to each other • they are excited and move faster • They are moving away from each other. • Denser Cold liquid - • molecules that are close to each other, • they are packed close • are NOT able to move much.

  5. Moving the Mantle Lab:

  6. Convection Current – • The flow that transfers heat within a fluid • set in motion by the heating and cooling of the fluid, • This changes the fluid’s density • continues as long as heat is added

  7. Convection in the Earth’s Mantle – • Heat is from Earth’s core • It rises into the asthenosphere • heats it up • This causes convection currents

  8. Magma sinks, plates dragged towards each other.        The repeated heating and rising of the magma sets up continuous convection currents in the mantle, causing the plates to move.
