Overview • Bumpers are an import feature as a backup system to proximity sensors. • It ensures building and equipment protection.
Needs Addressed • SAFETY (1) • Cost (5) • Easy to manufacture (11) • Robust (6) • Wow Factor (3), (8)
Issues • Must be designed to provide safety to the robot it’s self as well as its surrounding environment. • Should be removable to maintain a modular robot. • Should not reduce accessibility of components.
CONCEPTS • 360-Degree Wrapping • A bumper would have 360-degree coverage around the robot ie. (bumper car) • Stoppers • Specifically localized shock-absorbing material. • None • RP100 will have no bumper.
Preliminary Analysis • Stoppers • Pros • Easy to replace • Minimal space required Cons • Low WOW factor • Partial protection • Cost • ½” circular stopper: $11.91/pk of 64 • 360-Degree Wrapping • Pros • Complete coverage • Inexpensive • Easy to attach • Cons • Comprimises accessibility • Cost • 4.25x.5”: $8.22/2’ • None • Pros • Very Inexpensive • Will allow time to develop non-backup sys. • Cons • No protection • Cost • N/A
Final Concept None / 360-Degree After the filtering of our concepts through the concept selection scoring process we have concluded that no bumper would be the first choice. However it is believed that the 360-degree bumper should be developed for safety reasons.
