DATA SHARING:benefits both science and society • Sharing data is becoming increasingly important to science, both for the integrity of science (i.e., replication) and for the development of synthetic data products that allow existing data to be applied to new problems. • However, the degree to which researchers are willing to share data depends to a large extent on the responsible conduct of their colleagues who reuse that data. • It is crucial that data users honor the trust placed in them by those who make their data available, by providing proper attribution or co-authorship and accepting reasonable constraints on data use. • Formal ethical guidelines (for any purpose) developed by a community can facilitate decision making by individuals
