  2. Overview Strong emotions are common with the birth of a child, including joy and excitement to anxiety and fear. However, it can also lead to postpartum depression, which is something you might not expect. A large number of new mothers suffer the "baby blues" after giving birth, which include mood changes, crying works, anxiety, and difficulty falling asleep. The first two to three days following delivery are typically when baby blues start, lasting up to two weeks.

  3. Postpartum depression symptoms Feeling sad, worthless, hopeless or guilty. Worrying excessively or feeling on edge. Loss of interest in hobbies or things you once enjoyed. Changes in appetite or not eating. Loss of energy and motivation.
