  2. Potcasting - Video Podcast on Anatomical Specimens (Royal Veterinary College) Rationale • Students have a lot to learn in 1st year within a very short period of time. e.g., the anatomy of the head needs to be covered in 4 weeks! • Problem getting students to think in 3D from a 2D diagram. • To develop students independent learning skills (key skill) • Students can visit these pots later on in their courses or after. • Free up staff time: less 1-to-1 interaction: students study independently. • A resource pool of leaning objects to help explain difficult concepts. Application Description • Select one specific body system (the Head system) • Work with student focus group to identify relevant anatomical topics • Video pots and edit to identify key structures • Upload to the VLE and link to the relevant section of the curriculum Future • Catalogue a full range of specimens • Get students to record their own potcasts

  3. Student-generated podcasts on current issues in Genetics (Genetics, University of Leicester) Rationale For medical students who do not gain laboratory experience Application Description Students were divided into groups of 4-6 students: each group researched and selected a topic and developed a podcast on that topic: e.g.,. • Ethical issues surrounding Genetics Screening • Diabetes • DNA fingerprinting • Ethnical issues surrounding Designer Babies • HAEMOPHILIA A+B • Screening babies Students decide the format of their podcast, e.g. interview, discussion, speaker. Podcasts to be made available to other students via VLE Future Content from interviews with experts in Genetics (exposure to the experts of world-class researchers)

  5. John and Monica’s story: A Carer’s Perspective John was 57 years old when he had his stroke. Prior to the stroke in 1995 he was fit and well.  However, on reflection, Monica realises that something was not quite right with her husband, John, as he had been having moments when he was visually disorientated and losing his focus. Monica now thinks this could have been due to transient ischaemic attacks.  He did not see his GP about these episodes but he did go to the optician and was given a new prescription for glasses. Monica was John's full time carer. Remember, this is just one carer's perspective. Introduction (weblink) Sky News report (Blackboard content)
