  1. Water Sustainability at Crescent Valley High School Shana Blumenthal David Lach Chris Graham Sarah Auer

  2. Money Spent on WaterCV vs. CHS • During last August, $7,451 was spent at CV • $89,412 per year at CV • $5,669 per month was spent at CHS • $68,028 per year at CHS

  3. Water Usage CV vs. CHS • 14,150,000 gallons used per year at CV • 14 water meters • Estimated that CHS uses 10,756,606 gallons per year • 7 water meters

  4. Focus on Bathrooms at CV • A majority of water used by students is because of bathroom use

  5. Survey Results • How often do you use the drinking fountains? • A few times a day 111 • Once a day 41 • A few times a week 73 • A few times a month 59 • Almost never 343 • How often do you use the showers? • Everyday after a school sport or P.E. class 20 • A few times a week after a sport or class 14 • A few times a month after a sport or class 4 • Never 516 • 93% of CV students never use the showers • How often do you use the toilet at school? • A few times a day 139 • Once a day 210 • A few times a week 77 • A few times a month 56 • Almost never 136

  6. Sustainable Practices • 30 1.6 gallon toilets • Most sinks are automatic

  7. Unsustainable Practices • B-building: 4 manual sinks, 2 of the sinks leak, 4 toilets with no gallon specification, 1 toilet perpetually runs • Gym: 4 sinks manual, 2 of the sinks leak, 14 toilets with no gallon specification, 1 toilet perpetually runs • F-building: 1 inefficient drinking fountain • Main Hall: 1 inefficient drinking fountain, 1 toilet perpetually runs

  8. Conclusions/Theories • CHS may use less water because the school is newer • Decreasing the number of water meters may increase efficiency • Most of CV’s unsustainable practices are a result of either malfunctioning or outdated equipment

  9. What is the Next Step? • Find out the purpose of each water meter at CV • Research costs of new facilities such as toilets and sinks • Research a rainwater collector • Look into CHS’s potentially sustainable practices • Consider other aspects of CV water use
