  1. Technology Expository Essay How Technology Affects Our Lives Christopher David McCray COM 150 January 20, 2012 Karen Shively How Technology Affects Our Lives Have you ever wondered how much different life would be without the continued study and advancement in technology? A lot of conveniences that we now know and cannot imagine living without make our lives easier and more comfortable. Technology is helping the world stay connected and grow at an alarming rate. Today technology is being used in ways that were not imaginable thirty to forty years ago. Technology is now being used to make advances in the field of medicine, fine better ways to produce clean energy, and needless to say it creating a more efficient and effective work force....show more content... Having the advantage of being able to send email long distances helps keep down on the cost of overpriced long distance calling. Who would have thought sending mail almost instantly would be possible decades ago. Technology continues to shape our work lives' as well as our personal lives', and we are seeing the changes of technology on a more rapid pace. The change technology has bought to society has not only effected the way we communicate, but it also effects the way we learn. Today learning is made easier, more convenient, and more attainable that ever before. With tools such as the computers, notebooks, and tablets (desktop and laptop computers) with internet access and different forms of software, people today have unlimited information at their fingertips at any given time of the day. Learning never has to stop when technology is only a second a way. An individual no longer has to spend countless hours at the library to do research, they can simply log onto the internet. Technology has made and is continuing to make learning more fun to many individuals, encouraging them to further pursue learning opportunities. Technology not only helps up learn and make learning more convenient for those of us with busy lives but it also influences the way we live; and I mean this in the most literal way. Technological advances throughout history have changed our healthcare system. We ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  2. Technology Trends Essay INTRODUCTION It seems that every year people turn increasingly toward living their lives through technology. It has inundated society, families, jobs, and lives. Three developing trends that in some ways overlap each other are specifically related to living in a technology world. These trends are particularly important to the school librarian because many students are living their lives through the web. In order to reach those students, the librarian must be knowledgeable about the trends and applications and be able to use and apply them in a library setting. By using them, the librarian makes the library relevant to students, and brings the library to students where the students are. The first trend is social communication...show more content... TREND ONE – SOCIAL COMMUNICATION Social communication is found on the web through blogs, online journaling, emailing, instant messaging, and micro–blogging. People use these applications to track their lives, inform others what they have been doing, make recommendations, rant about an interest, and a variety of other reasons. There is some sort of social communication about virtually every topic under the sun. Blogs, which is short for web–blogs, are essentially a place online where people go to write about their thoughts, ideas, feelings, etc. in their own voice in order to share it with the masses ("Exploring web 2.0 and libraries," 2006). In a blog, someone can respond to the writer with a comment, and then the blogger can post the comment for others to view, or they can delete it. In education or in a library, a blog could be used to share ideas about a topic, recommend books, share thoughts on a book, share news about upcoming events, share information about a past event, etc. (Naslund & Guistini, 2008). Blogs are very applicable to the library setting. It is a place to have conversations about anything. It could become a sort of on–line book club. The blog should invite participation. The more engaged students are, the more likely they are to care about the library ("Technology trends for a 2.0 world," 2007). Some of the more popular blog sites are blogger.com, edublogger.com, and blogsopt.com (Naslund & Guistini, 2008). Micro–blogging is ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  3. Information and communications technology (ICT)? To illustrate the importance of Information and Communications technology (ICT) for the smooth running of a multi–site business. Information and communications technology is a system used to control, manage, process and create information through telecommunications technology and computers. (Otherwise known as ICT). Although information and communications technology describes a large range of systems there are still some underlining common features. An information system incorporates a group of people, equipment and procedures. It is there to collect, record, process, store, retrieve and present information. The importance of ICT for the smooth running of a multi–site business...show more content... EPOS ordering systems being an example of this, as a product is purchased an order is placed for more stock. – Commerce opportunities: ICT can improve a company's internal and external operations. Internally, a company can use ICT to streamline, integrate and synchronise key operating processes, (such as procurement, order fulfilment and customer service). Then it can extend these ICT enabled processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of supply and distribution channels. – Content opportunities: Benefits are achieved when a company harnesses information and knowledge located inside and outside the company to improve the performance of individuals and groups as they make decisions and take actions. The individuals and groups in question may belong to the same organisation or they may be customers, suppliers and business partners working with company employees to achieve common goals. As well as making people work "smarter", information and knowledge can be used to create new products and services or to add value to existing ones, thus improving a company's competitive position. – Community Opportunities: Benefits can also be achieved when a company uses networked technologies to increase the commitment and loyalty of internal and external communities. Inside the company, e–mail, groupware and intranets can be used to link employees around the world to information resources, internal work ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  4. Women in Technology Essay example Women in Technology Women have played a major role in computing for centuries as well as men. The purpose of this paper is to gain knowledge on women involved in technology who for some reason do not gain as much recognition as do men. There are numerous women within this field worth talking about, but the ones chosen were Ada Byron, Grace Hopper, Evelyn Granville, and Krisztina Holly. The history of each individual will be discussed as well as what form of influence they had in computers. Introduction The revolution of computers had begun centuries ago. It has been the work of many over the course of years to bring computers where they are today. For quite some time it entailed people with bright imaginations to come up with...show more content... Lady Lovelace had then suggested to Babbage to write a formal plan on how an engine could calculate Bernoulli numbers. It was this plan that the two of them worked on that is now considered the first computer program. Because of her foresight, the Unites States Department of Defense developed a software program and named it Ada in honor of her in 1979. Unfortunately, her life was short lived and died at the age of 36. She is formally known as "The Enchantress of Numbers" and her precognition of computers by more than a century is what many of us believe is new computing. Her passion for Babbage's ideas were intense and had people during that era lived longer, there is no telling what she and Babbage may have invented. Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper Grace Hopper was born on December 9, 1906 in New York City. She lived a normal upbringing and loved to do conventional childhood things with the exception of her fondness for devices. She truly enjoyed taking things apart to see how they worked and put them back together again. According to Danis, "When grace was seven, she had taken apart seven alarm clocks in her house" (1997). Grace's parents taught her and her siblings to be unique and not do what is customary of women. Grace went on to Graduate with her BA in Mathematics and Physics and completed her MA and Ph.D. by the age of 28. Hopper married in 1930, separated in 1940, and divorced in 1945. 6. Information Technology Essay Information technology is a rapidly growing part of today's society. It affects everyone's life in many aspects. Every human endeavor is influenced by information technology and the increasing rate at which what it can perform includes. One area of human endeavor that information technology has greatly influenced is the practice of medicine, specifically veterinary medicine. Not only has veterinary medicine been influenced by information technology, it has also been enhanced by it. The degree to which the practice of veterinary medicine includes information technology is observable at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Central New York on Erie Blvd. in Syracuse, New York. Working, volunteering and interning are all acceptable ways to gain experience in the field of veterinary medicine. The reason behind schools requiring experience is to ensure that the student knows what they are getting into before they spend thousands of dollars (approx. $20,000/yr.) and at least four years of their life in an extremely intensive academic environment. Many people have an altered idea of what being a vet is about. A lot of physical and emotion endurance is necessary to be a successful veterinarian. Many people are unaware of that. The specific undergraduate course requirements to get into a school of veterinary medicine vary between the schools. All of them are science intensive. Most require a well–rounded education. The University of California at Davis school of veterinary medicine requires one year of general biology, one year of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, and one year of physics as far as lower division requirements. Upper division requirements include a semester of biochemistry, a semester of systemic physiology, a semester of vertebrate embryology, and a semester of genetics. On top of that they want their applicants to have taken courses in English composition, humanities, social sciences as well as statistics. Simply taking these courses is not enough, they need to be completed with a GPA above a 2.5. However, the competition has an average GPA of 3.45. The ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  7. The Internet and Technology Essay The Internet and Technology Technology today has made an impact in our everyday lives. Technology offers many advances in the world. One of the areas of impact is in the field of education. An important technological advance has been movies and videos. Some would say these have become vital teaching tools. Technology as a whole has made way for several new conventions, some good, and some bad. While there are several advantages to using technology to enhance education, there are also several disadvantages. Technology as it is used today can improve the knowledge a student attains. However, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. As Christians we need to be aware of the many things that technology has to offer us so that our...show more content... Many different students learn in many different ways. For example some are visual learners, others are oral learners and still, others are the kind of students who must take notes several times before they fully understand a concept. Technology gives students an interesting way to learn, it helps those students that are visual learners, rather than verbal learners. It helps students become individual learners, offering a plethora of websites for students to look up and learn from on their own. On the other hand, technology can be a detriment to students. First of all, teachers put too much emphasis on the appearance of assignments, such as the pictures and the font type and the format, rather than paying attention to the actual quality of the assignment. Students spend more time on finding pictures, typing up their work in special fonts, and focusing on the looks of their papers, rather than focusing on the important things, such as the thesis statements, organization and details the paper contains. "Students spend too much time creating high–tech presentations that don't offer significant improvements over traditional slide shows, oral presentations, index cards and all" (Bassett 75). This isn't teaching the student anything except that looks are more important than content. Is that what we want to teach the next generation of students? 8. The Pros and Cons of Technology Essay People very often debate whether technology is good or bad. Many people believe that technology can only cause harm to their lives and society, while many others strongly defend the technologies which have made their lives much more leisurely and enriching than it could have been several hundred years ago. In my opinion, both of these views are correct to an extent, but I also believe that what should be examined is not whether technology in its self is good or bad, but rather how we as humans use it.For decades now, television has been accused of contributing to the dissolution of the American family and the destruction of the minds of those who watch it. However, although the TV has been involved in this, the problem roots not with...show more content... Refrigerators, gas and electric ovens, microwaves, vacuums, dishwashers....the list goes on and on. All these things have made housework tremendously easier than it would have been about 100 years ago. This results with both positive and negative effects. It has given us easier ways to get jobs done, leaving more time for other things, but the bad part of this is what is chosen to do in this extra time. In many cases, this extra time is spent doing leisurely things, which might make us more happy, but also has an effect on our health. Lately we have become aware of the dangers of heart disease and the health benefits of exercise....the exercise we would have gotten 100 years ago just from doing our daily chores but now aren't getting enough of because we don't have to work as hard to do those same chores. This can be blamed on technology, but again, in fact it is our own fault because we chose to use the technology and spend the extra time lazing around. Now, something that really bothers me about technology is what is made out of it. I often question why people spend so much time and money trying to come up with so many useless things when we have global warming problems and starving children working in shoe factories. For example, scientists spent years to make a clone of a sheep. Now let me ask you, is their any practical use in knowing how to clone a sheep? Many people think that eventually this scientific advancement will lead into ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  9. Technology Argumentative Essay Today's society has advanced so this past decade. So much to the point we use it at a daily basis. Technology does have it's perks, but are we getting too dependent on it? Technology has its advantages in many ways and I know firsthand how powerful and convenient today's technology is. Without it, I would have a lot of trouble getting through my day. I would not be able to get a hold of someone as easy without my blackberry. I am constantly text messaging on it. So much to the point that I trip over stuff while I am walking due to reading a long text. My blackberry is basically my life. Life is more simple with these wonderful devices, but we are becoming too lazy to pick up a book and learn things on our own. I feel like I and many of my classmates barley open a book for class, instead we use the internet for everything. This is becoming a serious issue. I feel that we are not expanding our minds like we used to back when technology was not as advanced. I remember back in middle school were the internet was available, but I did not let it take up time in my day. I found myself being more productive with my life back then. Now, I probably spent a fourth of my day using the internet, which is not necessary at all. With so much power to discover new things without even thinking makes me wonder what will happen to our next generation as technology advances. Are we headed for a world where everything is technology driven and devoid of what makes us human? I look at today's society and I feel that it is really getting to that point. It is almost as if we are turning into robots. We are divorcing ourselves from regular human activities. ` We are now getting to the point where we are programmed to use technology at a daily basis. My generation needs to realize that there are many other types of activities that give us greater satisfaction than anything that is offered online. Instead of spending two to three hours text messaging a friend, social networking and checking listings on Ebay, we should really take a visit to a local ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  10. Evolution Of Technology Essay examples Primitive men cleaved their universe into friends and enemies and responded with quick, deep emotion to even the mildest threats emanating from outside the arbitrary boundary. With the rise of chiefdoms and states, this tendency became institutionalized, war was adopted as an instrument of policy of some of the new societies, and those that employed it best became – tragically – the most successful. The evolution of warfare was an autocatalytic reaction that could not be halted by any people, because to attempt to reverse the process unilaterally was to fall victim. –E.O. To adequately prepare each student for the next century, educators must develop strategies to assure not only the mastery of abilities in functional areas of business and technology but also the command of intercultural communication skills. Accomplishment of this goal is one of the biggest challenges facing institutions of higher education today. (Kim 617). This quote exemplifies the need for the global mindset and gives a concise outline of what it is. This semester in Professor Kim's BUS/COM 354 class, students engaged in an e–mail debate with students from Braunschweig University in Germany and also engaged in an e–mail discussion with students from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. We found a lot of information on global mindset, however, we did not find a concrete definition. But we did find a definition of mindset. "Mindset is the perception filter through which we see the world" (Chen and Starosta). So what we did was pool all of our individual information and try to come up with a definition in our own terms. What we came up with is, "global mindset is the ideology that one must take with him/her into today's society. Not necessarily business, but life in general. It incorporates intercultural sensitivity, intercultural awareness, and cultural diversity knowledge. It reduces ethnocentrism and eliminates parochialism, ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  11. Persuasive Essay On Technology And Technology As time has progressed so have we and so has the technology that we create. We are at a point in time that everyone with the monetary means has the answers to everything at the tips of the fingers. Yet this amazing breakthrough in science and technology is tainted by the fact that people don't know how to control it. We have become completely addicted to our cellphones, absolutely engrossed and overtaken by the fact that we have all this access that we can't separate ourselves from, not even enough to realize that we may be in too deep. First, as teens we all wanted the newest things. The latest trends in fashion, the latest gadgets, and the latest cell phones. We begged our parents to get us that new shiny iPhone when it came out or that new Samsung phone, we wanted whatever we thought was cooler and better, and what we thought we could not survive without. And this is mostly because of what we can do on our phones. As Joelle Renstrom said in an interview with BU Today students have a "Fear of missing out", students are afraid of missing text messages, not knowing their friend's latest post on Instagram, or not knowing what happened last night on that Snapchat story. There is also the factor that students are anxious when they don't respond immediately as Renstrom puts it "There's a term called techno– stress to describe the frenzy"; they get nervous and worried when they receive a message or an email and they don't immediately respond. It is the fear of being penalized for not being attentive to your phone 24/7. On the other hand, it is the feeling of being liked and well–known among your peers. When we post a picture or tweet something and someone likes it, retweets it, or responds in any way that is positive it makes us feel good about ourselves therefore we look to post more and have a more active social media presence so that we can have feeling repeatedly. It's like being an addict with and unlimited supply. Secondly, studies have shown that excessive cellphone use can lead to serious psychological problems. In a recent study, it was discovered that in late 2012 more than 50% of the population owned a smartphone and around that same time the rate pf depression and suicide in teens began to increase. ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

Email, social networking sites and the world of the Internet have opened a whole new avenue of communication. There is acceleration of decision making with the use of technology. Communication can occur anywhere at any time. Job applicants no longer actually visit businesses to complete an application. Technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. Since the creation of modern technology man has been entwined with it. On average a Smartphone user will check their phones 150 times a day, text 23 times, voice calls 22 times, use their camera 8 times, check social media 9 times and news 6 times. However, technological breakthroughs also produce social and ethical consequences. Computers are no exception to this rule. Technology is often seen as a way to increase learning and collaboration on students on college campuses. The current generation of college students has basically grown up with technology in their lives always, and these students are among the earliest of creations of new advances in technology. With this students are encouraged to explore new ways of learning as well as connecting to their campus community, collaborate with peers, learn new information, and demonstrate what they have learned through technology which is essential for college campuses seeking to meet the necessities of present day college students. In order to effectively use technology to improve education, we must investigate how students are currently using technology, what they want from their colleges in the use of technology, how technology impacts educational outcomes, and how these factors differ for different student populations. Nowadays, Technology has been an important knowledge of tools and crafts used to help people in many different life aspects in order to generate efficiency and optimize time, money and any kind of resource. The U.S Department of Education is developing a plan, The National Education Technology Plan, to incorporate technology properly into the classroom. The goal of this plan is to improve student learning and to prepare students for the world we live in...show more content... (NCTM). Using technology in the classroom is a sensitive issue. It is the teacher?s responsibility to know when it is appropriate to use technology and when it is not. Students will not be able to learn and understand mathematics, if they never have a solid foundation to start from. For example, students may know how to graph an equation on a calculator and determine the zeros, but if they were never taught how to algebraically solve the equation or how to hand graph the equation, do they really understand and know how to solve an equation? It is the teacher?s role to give students the opportunity to learn a topic, and it is technology?s role to help students expand and deepen that knowledge. Not all topics should be taught in the ?teaching first, then technology? format. Sometimes it is necessary to use technology in the teaching process. Technology can enhance the teaching process, which in turn increases student learning. Teachers can use computers and projectors to help students visualize geometric shapes. Programs like The Geometer?s Sketchpad allow students and teachers to manipulate shapes and see how different things (area, perimeter, angles, etc.) are effected. After students hand graph an equation, a teacher could project the graph onto the board in order for students to check their work. Technology can ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  20. Assistive Technology Essay example Assistive Technology Abstract: Assistive technology is one way that individuals with learning disabilities have been able to overcome the difficulties with comprehension that they possess. This form of technology comes in many forms, ranging from low to high technology devices. These devices, some as simple as a highlighter, help to organize and keep on track the individual with a learning disability. Assistive technology has many benefits to a student and helps individuals to compensate in their studies to be able to achieve all that they can in their school career. Assistive technology is often used by individuals with a learning disability. A learning disability "describes a neurobiological disorder in which a person's brain...show more content... The range of technology can be from low to high technology devices (Goodman 1). The Assistive Technology Act of 1998 combines both devices and services in their definition. The law provides that each state and territory has provisions for the availability of the technology for people with disabilities and that the services have to be available to them. There are many reasons why an individual with a learning disability would want to use assistive technology. To begin with, a person would want to learn how to utilize the forms of technology available while still young since these learning problems can persist through a lifetime. If a child learns to use these devices, they will have greater success through their lives, since they are now being able to function with the "norm". Research has been conducted and it proves that the usage of the assistive technology devices improve the students learning experiences. Everyone who needs to use the devices should have them readily available to them. Learning disabilities are not meant to be fixed but are instead meant to be dealt with. The handling of the assistive technology helps students deal with an issue that they have, and since it does not go away, they need to learn to work with their gifts. Trying to make the problems disappear will not work, since a learning disability does not just go away, but it ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  21. The Future In Technology Essay Can you imagine a machine so big it dwarfs entire planets? Can you imagine a machine with a single goal, a single purpose? Can you see it, hovering in space, blotting out the stars, so big it bends thought? Can you imagine a machine so complex that no human has ever even tried to understand it, and yet the machine exists because humans built it in the first place? A machine consisting of entire worlds, entire ecosystems powered by chemicals and energy regulated by computers that build and program themselves. Imagine these worlds connected by transport and communications systems, always kept up to date automatically, and modified as needed by the people who live in these habitats. Can you imagine a machine that makes money obsolete,...show more content... Can you see the hundreds of spheres being suspended in perfect harmony, each sphere containing an atmosphere with a functioning food chain and energy–tree, genetically perfect, everything held in place by massive computers. All this simply because a member of the human race desired such a world to live on. An entire Eco–sphere designed, built, genetically engineered to fulfill the needs of a single human. Do you want a desert environment, with light rains in the mornings, or do you want an ocean world, with crystal living quarters twenty miles under water that glows in the dark? Whatever you want, this machine will design it for you, creating new technology and materials where necessary if necessary. Can you imagine how many needs a trillion humans have each day, how many needs this machine is forced to fulfill simply because its programmed to? Can you imagine the strain this machine is under? Can you imagine the minerals and energy needed to keep such a system working? Can you imagine the computer at the core of all this, the master that drives all this, the computer that controls everything this machine has ever done? This master computer contains a single line of code. Can you see all this in your mind? Can you imagine what this code must look like? What kind of genius wrote this code? He wasn't a genius, and the code is simple enough for a five–year–old to understand. "Make Humans Happy". This entire ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
