VINITI RAN Historyand present time • Founded – 1952 by Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) • Since that time – the leading information center in former Soviet Union (USSR), and now – in Russia and CIS countries • Today – one of the main producers of scientific and technical information in the world

VINITI RAN VINITI’s Abstract Journal - RZh • Published since 1952 continuously • Periodical publication with monthly or bimonthly issues • Annually includes about 1 million indexed documents as abstracts, summaries and bibliography of scientific and technical primary publications • Sources from 70 countries on 40 languages • Includes 70% - foreign documents, 30% - Russian documents • Consists of 28 summary subject volumes with 208 sections, each of which is issued independently as well, plus 41 subject sections not included in summary volumes

VINITI RAN VINITI’s Abstract Database • One of the world largest documental database • Contains about 28 million records since 1981 till present time • 19 subject divisions as separate DB • Multidisciplinary file joining all divisions since 2000 • Main distribution - online access on VINITI’s Internet-platform with monthly updating • Different selects on the user’s requests on CD-, DVD-ROM’s or FTP

VINITI RAN VINITI’s Electronic Abstract Journal - e-RZh • Full analogue of RZh in print form • Issued since 1995 in DOS and Windows • Friendly user interface with broad search possibilities: - browse of content of the issue - listing it from page to page - search using subject and author indexes - subject and author search on all textual fields

VINITI RAN Main sources of primary information for VINITI’s products and services • Periodicals and Serials in print and electronic forms - main source -70-75% of all information included in VINITI’s products • Books - monographs, collected papers, reports of scientific conferences, textbooks for institutions of higher education etc. • Deposited scientific manuscripts - “grey literature” type of documents • Other documents - patents, standards, dissertations etc.

VINITI RAN Some statistics about annual input document flow for VINITI’s information products • Total volume of input flow - more than 200.000 documents • Foreign journals and serials – about 6000 titles and 37.000 issues - from 70 countries on 40 languages • Russian journals and serials - about 3500 titles and 23.000 issues • Russian books – about 20.000 copies • Author preprints of Russian dissertations – 19.000 copies • Foreign books and thesis – 1500 copies • Patents and other documents – more than 100.000 copies

VINITI RAN VINITI’s Library Collection • Total volume - 2 million documents, including: - Foreign journals - 800.000 issues - Russian journals - 190.000 issues - Russian books - 290.000 copies - Foreign books - 35.000 copies - Deposited manuscripts - 200.000 documents since 1962 - Microfilms and microfiches - 185.000 copies since 1970-s’

VINITI RAN Deposit of manuscripts (scientific articles and other non-published documents) • Specific activity - to accept scientific papers for endless storage • Specific document is formed - deposited manuscript (DM) - the kind of grey literature • DM acquires the status of published document after depositing process and publishing the information in special bibliographic index • Beginning of the activity - 1962 (first documents were accepted) • Present collection of DM - about 200.000 documents • Annual present flow - more than 2500 manuscripts

VINITI RAN Library and Information Services • Library - service for individual internal and external users with primary documents and their copies in print and electronic forms on the basis of VINITI’s collection of literature and accessible electronic resources • Information service: - supporting of online access to VINITI’s DB - providing with secondary (abstract and bibliographic) subject information of individual users and organizations according to their requests on the basis of VINITI’s and foreign DB and online resources - other forms of information service • Document Delivery Service with copies of documents in print and electronic forms
