  2. Biography • She was born as Marie Grosholtz in 1761 in Strasbourg, France. • Her father died two months before she were born. • Her mother took her to Berne. • Doctor Philippe Curtius. • Marie used to call Dr. Curtius uncle, • Curtius trained her to become an expert wax sculptor.

  3. In Paris she became involved in French Revolution. • Marie was arrested and she was going to be executed. • When Curtius died in 1794, he left his collection of waxworks to Marie. • In 1795 she married Francois Tussaud. They had two children. • In 1802 she fled to England . She took her own growing collection. • She died in 1850 at the age of 88.

  8. Madame Tussaud's wax museum has grown to become the most important tourist attraction in London, incorporating (until recently) the London Planetarium in its west wing. • Madame Tussaud’s museum is located on Marylebone Road.

  23. How wax sculptures are made?

  24. First Step Making the armature: when the necessary information has been collected and the pose decided, the sculptor makes this metal frame to support the clay.

  25. Second Step Modeling in clay: the sculptor builds up the entire figure in clay.

  26. Third Step Molding the head: a plaster mould of about 12 pieces is made from the clay head. The pieces are removed and reassembled to receive molten wax.

  27. Forth Step When the wax has cooled and hardened, the pieced of the plaster head mould are removed.

  28. Fifth Step Meanwhile a plaster mould of the body has been made and lined with fiberglass. Here, the mould is chipped away to reveal the body.

  29. Sixth Step After fitting glass eyes into the hollow wax head, real hair is inserted hair by hair into the warmed scalp, then washed, trimmed and dressed.
