  2. Parents must regard their children as children of God and respect them as human persons...a child is not something owed to one, but it is a gift. The “supreme gift of marriage” is a human person. A child may not be considered a piece of property. Catechism 222, 2378 Children, obey your parents – for this is right. Honour your father and your mother – which is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth. Eph 6:1-4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead bring them up in the training and correction of the Lord. Eph 6:3-4 • What sort of duties does the Bible say that parents have for children? Why should they? • What sort of duties do children have for parents? • How important is this advice? Explain what you think about one of the points. • **Does society today respect this advice?

  3. The Importance of the Family Look at the statements. Which ones do you agree with? Give a score of how much you agree with them. 1- (most) Explain 2 top reasons why a family is important for Christianity. What would bad parenting be like, from a Christian viewpoint? **How important is the example of the parents, in teaching their children about Christian life?

  4. How does the Church support family life? Mindmap the ways. **Do you think this is enough to give people the message that families are essential to the well-being of children and important to the Church?

  5. What do these 2 quotes suggest about the way parents are trying to fulfil their Christian vocation? It’s not for me to tell them what to do with their lives; I leave it up to them! • I just make sure I drag them to church each Sunday! How could you improve on these sentences?

Do a leaflet for new families coming into the church to show how the Church supports them • Family masses, where parents can bring young children • Groups for children and young people in the parish • Days of reflection to help couples focus on their marriage • Social events for families eg days out • Funds schools that support the Catholic education of children • Charities that support marriages eg Catholic Marriage Counselling, Catholic Marriage Care
