  6. BXR-48000 Chassis • Power • Switching, Interfaces and Control • Cooling • Expansion from single chassis to dual chassis can be a hitless field upgrade (although we recommend an initial dual-chassis installation if possible) Upper Fan Tray Card Cages Lower Fan Tray Power Conditioning Modules

  7. + Serial Port Ethernet Port Display NEXT Button SELECT Button NMI Button Reset Button System LEDs BXR-48000 SCP Y X

  8. BXR-48000 Dual SCP Configuration • Optional dual SCPs provide protection • The primary active SCP emits a "heartbeat" at regular intervals • Primary/Secondary vs. Active/Standby SCPs • Primary – is set as the default SCP to control the system after it boots • Secondary – is set as the backup SCP should the primary fail • Active – is the SCP that is currently controlling the system • Standby – is the backup SCP

  9. + Ejection/Insertion Levers LEDs Lock BXR-48000 Fabric Modules • Variable-length packet fabric • Support up to 12(+1), 40 Gbps fabrics per chassis • One fabric for every four port cards • Contiguous population • Protocol agnostic fabrics • Data is distributed evenly across all fabrics • N+1 fabric protection • Scales from 240 Gbps to a 480 Gbps system with fabric redundancy • Fail over protection is provided by a "hitless" reconstruction process

  10. + BXR-48000 Port Cards • Input/Output Modules • Each port card supports up to 10 Gbps of full-duplex capacity • Three types: • ATM • IP-Aware (IPA) ATM • Packet over SONET (POS) OC-3c OC-12c LEDs OC-48c

  11. ATM Port Cards • Cell-based interfaces capable of normal ATM functions • PVC, SVC, SPVC • Traffic management, per-VC queuing, scheduling • ILMI, PNNI routing • ATM port card hardware • 16 port OC-3c/STM-1 in multimode and single mode • 16 port OC-12c/STM-4* in multimode and single mode • 4 port OC-48c/STM-16 in single mode • 1 port OC-192c/STM-64 in single mode * Each port configurable as OC-12c/STM-4 or OC-3c/STM-1 Ejection/Insertion Levers (with locks)

  12. IP-Aware (IPA) ATM Port Cards • An IP-aware ATM interface has ATM capabilities plus capabilities in an IP/MPLS network: • Hop-by-hop routing when there is no LSP for the destination • Can originate or terminate an LSP, encapsulating/decapsulating packets using RFC 1483/2684 (bridged/routed PVCs) • Support for ATM and MPLS control planes on the same port • Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) • Provider Edge (PE) capability • A topology change can make a transit LSR become an LER, the IPA card performs both roles. • Ingress and egress to the MPLS network require IP look-ups • A network failure could cause a transit LSR to unexpectedly become an LER that cannot perform IP lookups

  13. IPA ATM Port Card Hardware • Port card types, listed by interface: • 8 port OC-3c/STM-1 in multimode and single mode • 8 port OC-12c/STM-4* in multimode and single mode • 2 port OC-48c/STM-16 in single mode * Each port configurable as OC-12c/STM-4 or OC-3c/STM-1

  14. Packet over SONET (POS) Port Cards • SONET-based IP interfaces allow direct connection of IP devices • OC-12c and OC-48c POS port cards can be trunks for aggregated IP traffic • Hop-by-hop routing supported • Can originate or terminate an LSP • Provider Edge (PE) functionality • Multiservice capability over MPLS with PWE3 toward the network core

  15. POS Port Card Hardware • Port card types, listed by interface: • 12 port OC-3c/STM-1 in multimode and single mode • 12 port OC-12c/STM-4* in multimode and single mode • 4 port OC-48c/STM-16 in single mode * Each port configurable as OC-12c/STM-4 or OC-3c/STM-1

  16. Port Card Scheduling and Queuing • POS and IPA port cards have 16 hardware queues • Room to concurrently support ATM service categories, Diffserv, IntServ and best-effort IP • Configurable strict and weighted round robin queues • Provides support for unique service offerings

  17. + TCM Card Carrier BXR-48000 Card Carrier/TCM • The card carrier supports: • TCM and AIM • The TCM(s) are optionally redundant • The TCM provides system synchronization and manages the timing sources: • Primary and secondary line timing sources • Redundant BITS sources • Internal Stratum 3E clock • TCM(s) are located on chassis A only

  18. + AIM Card Carrier BXR-48000 Card Carrier/AIM • Supports five alarm relays • Has six LEDs which are: • LED1 - OK (green) • LED2 - Critical Alarm (blinking red) • LED3 - Major Alarm (red) • LED4 - Minor Alarm (amber) • LED5 - Unused • LED6 - Unused • Located on chassis A only

  19. BXR-48000 TIM • The physical connection point for external timing sources on the BXR-48000 • Accessible by removing a small cover on the back of chassis A TIM

  20. + PCM BXR-48000 PCMs • Requires –48v DC power • 2(+2) redundancy per chassis • PCMs provide: • EMI filtering • Short-term energy storage • Reverse feed polarity protection • Reverse discharge protection • Surge suppression • Under voltage trip PCM B1 PCM A1 PCM B0 PCM A0

  21. + Fan Trays BXR-48000 System Cooling Air Exhaust Protective Screen • Two removable fan trays with four fans in each tray • If a single fan fails, the remaining seven fans increase speed to compensate for the loss • Filter and protective screen keeps debris from the chassis Filter Air inlet
