Less than 30 seconds • Employerstypically receive hundreds of resumes for a single position • This increases the importance of the smallest detail How long do employers typically look at a resume?
Heading • Essential personal information • Formal name at the top – should stand out above all else • Include your address, phone number, and email address What should be included in a resume?
Objective • Employers often say this is the most important part of a resume • One sentence explanation of the type of job you are seeking • If you are applying for different jobs, change your objective to match each type What should be included in a resume?
Education • As students, this should be the next section of information • Specify the dates of attendance or graduation (or expected graduation) • Include education-related honors in this section What should be included in a resume?
Experience • “Work Experience” or “Employment Experience” • Include previous employers, their locations, your dates or employment, and your job title • Include at least two one-line descriptions of what your job duties and responsibilities were • Use action verbs to start each descriptions • Do not use “I” in descriptions What should be included in a resume?
Activities • Employers like to see people who have been involved in school or community activities • List special activities you participated in (prom committee) and organizations you joined (drama club, baseball team, etc) • Include years in which you participated What should be included in a resume?

Your resume should be divided into distinct sections • Major Headers: Objective, Education, Employment History/Work Experience, School Activities • Minor Headers: (to be used if appropriate) Computer Experience, Associations, Certifications, Community Activities, Honors/Awards, Interests and Hobbies, Projects, Relevant Courses, Volunteer Experience How do you set up a resume?
Do use a standard font such as TNR for text to ensure readability • Do use bold or caps to make all section headings stand out • Do use action verbs • Do list all computer skills and office equipment skills you possess • Do have someone proofread your resume • Do use quality paper • Do limit the length of your resume • Do be honest Do’s
Don’t use the word I, me, my or we • Don’t overuse highlighting techniques such as bold, italics or too many font sizes • Don’t use long complicated sentences • Don’t switch verb tenses • Don’t include job references as part of the resume itself • Don’t give personal statistics or profile (appearance, health, marital status) • Don’t include photographs • Don’t submit a handwritten resume • Don’t use liquid paper.
