Is “homeless” the right word?How McKinney-Vento defines it: • Students lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence • Students living in hotels, trailers, campsites, etc. due to lack of alternative accommodation • Students sharing housing for same reason • Students living in substandard housing

  7. Facts on Students Experiencing Homelessness • 20% of homeless children and youth do not attend school • Within a year, 41% of students without homes will attend 2 schools, and 28% will attend 3 or more schools • With each change in schools, the estimated academic setback is 4-6 months

Primary School District Responsibilities • Appoint a McKinney-Vento District Liaison • Provide outreach for school-age children potentially living in the community • Enroll students immediately • Provide transportation to a student’s school of origin • Set aside funding from Title I to assist homeless students

  9. What M-V Liaisons Do: • Provide professional development to school staff on an annual basis • Coordinate with outside resources to help serve student and family needs • Post outreach materials in community • Act as an advocate and contact point for students experiencing homelessness

  10. Project Homeless Connect – Annual Event with Provided Transportation Current Outside Programs • Columbia Rethreads Program: Clothing for students in-need • OEA Foundation Grant: Renewable $100 grant for teachers
