Title IX of the Civil Rights Act • Prohibits against sex discrimination against students and employees. • Males and females are expected to receive fair and equal treatment. “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal assistance.” Title IX and the OK Conference

  3. How do Athletics Comply with Title IX? 1) Participation- proportionality TK (2007-08): Girls were 45.14% of total enrollment Girls were 45.55% of total athletes This calculates to a +.42% ratio 2008-09: 518 Girls/513 Boys 2) Additional Program Components-GECA Title IX and the OK Conference

  5. Data gathered from two sources: • Athletic department information. • Coaches’ surveys. • Seven areas considered: • Coaching • Equipment, supplies, and uniforms. • Facilities • Scheduling • Medical/Athletic Training • Publicity • Travel • GECA met to complete audit on May 28. GECA Process

  6. Majority of areas showed no discrepancies between girls’ and boys’ sports. • Areas that did show significant discrepancies: • Expenses for equipment, uniforms, and supplies were higher for boys’ program (football) . • Locker room access in the fall-boys’ sports reported inadequate facilities. • Solution: utilize girls JV locker room for boys’ teams in the fall. • Inadequate facilities for softball and competitive cheer (construction issue). • Solution: install fencing at Page softball field to make it an adequate competition field.   7. Each board member has a copy of the GECA tonight. • KISD is gathering all audits. • Following board approval and submission to KISD, GECA will be posted on website. • Questions: call 795-5432. Publicizing the GECA
