  2. NAACP Founded February 12th 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of colored people it the oldest and the largest African-American civil rights organization. Today it has more than half a million members and supporters through out the United States and the world. The stated goal of the NAACP was to secure for all people the rights given in the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the United States which promised to end slavery, provide equal protection of the law, and universal adult male suffrage, respectively.

  3. Understanding the Problem Racial Profiling • Many criminal justice practices in the U.S. target minorities • Mandatory minimum sentencing • Use of police force • Recidivism and harsher sentencing for those with a record

The founding group • NAACP was partially formed in response to the ongoing practice of lynching’s and the race riot of 1908 in Springfield, Illinois. • Appalled at the violence that was being committed against the African-Americans, a group of white liberals issued to call a meeting to talk about racial justice. • Out of the sixty white liberals, 7 were African-American, and signed the call. The call was released on the centennial of Lincoln’s birth.

NAACP Social Activist Organization The social activist organization doing today; • End Segregated Social Events in Georgia Schools “After 30 years of racially segregated private proms at Wilcox County High School, a group of students successfully organized its first integrated prom. The students planned this event even though the school will still not condemn a separate segregated prom. This unfair practice must end.” • Sign the Texas Textbook Petition “The Texas State Board of Education was considering a new set of textbook standards which would eliminate large parts of African-American history from the books. Sign the petition to tell the Texas State Board of Education to not erase our collective history.”

NAACP Social Activist Organization • Trying to solve a current issue: In light of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin and the overwhelming national awareness around numerous issues surrounding this case, the NAACP has developed a set of policy principles called “Trayvon’s Law” which embody legislative responses that will greatly reduce the likelihood of another tragedy like the killing of Trayvon Martin. The principles of Trayvon’s Law are: • Ending racial profiling; • Repealing stand your ground type laws; • Creating law enforcement accountability through effective police oversight; • Improving training and best practices for community watch groups; and • Mandating law enforcement data collection on homicide cases involving people of color. In addition, state advocates can include policies that aim to dismantle the school to prison pipeline – which are critical to keeping youth safe and in schools
