  2. Objectives • I know the difference between traditional and alternative assessments. • I know the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and alternative assessments. • I know different types of alternative assessments and how to use them in my classroom.

  5. Alternative assessment • Performance based • More focused on communication, not right or wrong answers • Demonstrates abilities (Bradley)

Advantages • Traditional Assessment • Tests are easy to grade • Only one correct answer • Easy to shuffle questions to reduce cheating • (Dikli) • Alternative Assessment • Allows for differentiation to support individual learners • Allows students to self-assess and peer-assess • Broader, more in-depth • Easy to connect to real life situations

  7. Disadvantages • Traditional Assessment • Time consuming to create tests with H.O.T.S • Can restrict what is being tested • Emphasizes memorization • (Dikli) • Alternative Assessment • No one “right answer” • Time consuming to mark and produce on-going feedback

  8. When to use each method • Lesson content: Let assessment reflect what is most important for students to learn • Learning: Let assessment enhance learning and support instructional practice • Equity: Let assessment support every student’s opportunity to learn (Dikli)
