Biography • Born November 4, 1431 as prince of Romania • Seized the throne temporarily in 1448 and permanently in 1456 • Fought the Ottoman Turks • Impaled 40,000 people between 1459 and 1460 • Betrayed by his Hungarian allies and imprisoned for 12 years • Regained the throne in 1467 • Killed shortly after by his Ottoman ally LaiotaBasarab

  3. Personal Characteristics • Atrociously cruel, impaling men, women, and children for his pleasure • Ironically a devout Christian who fought to keep Muslims from invading his land • Considered a Romanian hero because of his sense of nationalism (impaled to protect his country)

Not So Fun Facts • Horribly sadistic prince who murdered 40,000 people • Notorious for his “forests of the impaled, Where thousands were impaled in various • Pushed nobles and their families into slave labor to rebuild a fallen castle. Not many survived to see its completion. • His severed head was preserved in honey and sent to Istanbul, where the sultan had it impaled for visual proof of his death

Impact on the World • His practice of occasionally drinking the blood of his victims led to the creation of Nosferatu, the most iconic version of the vampire ever • “Vlad Dracula” has become a household name because of the atrocities he committed • The stereotypical pale, black haired, cloaked vampire is an indirect result of overblown Vlad the Impaler stories
