  1. The sacrament of christening Christening in Orthodox Christian Religion

  2. Christening -spiritual birth of a person Christening is considered the first and the most important event in human`s life in the Christian religion, especially Orthodoxy. It is considered to be the person’s spiritual birth. Christening represents sinking or splashing with water, with given by the priest prayers set. After the person is christened he is protected by a Ministering Angel, and becomes a member of the Church and can take part at different Christian rituals.

  3. When the child should be christened? When the child should be christened? There isn’t a clear answer to this question. Nowadays a person can be christenedat any age. Until the age of seven the child needs just a parental agreement and a personal wish to get christened. Children from seven to seventeen years need to have parental agreements and a wish to be christened, at eighteen years christening depends just on children´s wish. According to an old tradition the child was christenedon the eighth or fortieth day from birth. On the eighth day from birth was chosen the name for child.

  4. Who can be agodparent? Who can be a godparent? Nowadays godparent´s choice is based on the personal relationship of friendship or sympathy. Godparents have an important role in the spiritual education of the child, they should teach him to go to the church, to attend the services from the church. Godparents also need to pray for their godson.

  5. The Significance of the Orthodox Ritual of Christening Each element in orthodox ritual of Christening expresses dedication to the person of Christ. For example: ,,cutting hair’’ marks Ministry of God, ‘’cross hanging from the neck’’ will remember Christ's cross and heroism and the obligation to respect the Christian ordinances of Christ, ’’ candle in hand’’ signifies the joy of spiritual growth. The christened person is helped to overcome selfishness, pride, lust, sloth, fear and be closer to the love with which Christ has loved man and the world.

  6. Spiritual symbols during Christening • Spiritual symbolic meaning during Christening ceremonies are: • straightening of the christened to the West (the symbol of darkness) for giving up the Satana, that is spiritual darkness; • child`s anointing for invincibility in the battle against Satana; • contact with water, in which the Holy Ghost descends on the christened, providing seeds of life and cleanses from sins; • white clothes indicate that the christened is without sins and he must lead a pure life; • walking around the font - the symbol of eternity; • hair cutting - the transmission to the newly-christened God`s will.
