  1. Distance Learning and Video Communication Support Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic Chair of Operations Research Computer Science Department University of Bundeswehr Munich goran.mihelcic@unibw.de

  2. Structure • Introduction • Motivation • Definition of Distance- / E-Learning • Concepts of Distance- / E-Learning • Live-Demonstration • Critical Success Factors • Questions Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  3. Good Morning Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  4. Good Morning • Research focus: • Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) • Business Process Management (BPM) • CRISYS (Critical Infrastructure System Analysis) Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  5. COMTESSA-Team Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  6. Motivation – Distance-/E-Learning • Speed of learning = key differentiator for organizations and individuals in pursuit of knowledge • New opportunities (paradigm change) in the way of learning through achievements in Information Technologies (IT) • Past  school-like, physical presence/course learning • Today (future)  IT-based learning • Enablers • Quickly and continuously developing power of computers (e.g. “Moore’s Law”) and telecommunications • Development of complex network structures (e.g. Internet, WWW,…) • Development of Multimedia  connecting/combining media that previously were separated Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  7. ...learning with the help of ICT-tools Definition E-Learning • E-learning is the application of computer-based technologies to enhance teaching and learning (Waterhouse, 2003) • E-learning is networked, which makes it capable of instant updating, storage/retrieval, distribution and sharing of instruction or information through the use of Internet technology (Rosenberg, 2001) • E-learning can be defined as education created and delivered by using technologies related to computer, the Internet and telephony, in combination or in isolated” (Chadha and Kumail, 2002) Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  8. Distance-/E-Learning • Distance Learning = E-Learning? • Historically early appearances  trying to bridge distance barriers, e.g. Course in Correspondence at University of Wisconsin in 1891 • Use of “pony-mail” • United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA - www.usdla.org) defines Distance Learning as "The acquisition of Knowledge and skills through mediated information and instruction, encompassing all technologies and other forms of learning at a distance“ • Today  Synonymic use Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  9. Benefits of E-Learning • What are the benefits? • Learning at any time at any place • Learning with regard to individual “style” and “speed” • Enrichment of learning material through IT • Connecting learners and trainers who can be spread allover the world Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  10. Concepts of E-Learning (1/2) • Asynchronous Online Learning: • Teacher and student are NOT online at the same time • Student solves tasks (online or offline) when he has time for it • Teacher answers questions (which he receives e.g. via e-mail) within a certain time • Asynchronous learning process  time gaps • Synchronous Online Learning: • Teacher and student are online at the same time • Direct communication with teacher (e.g. via chat, virtual classroom) • Virtual Classroom: • Simulation of a real classroom • Audio, visual  interactive (synchronous learning process) • Possibility of cooperative working on documents etc.) Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  11. Concepts of E-Learning (2/2) • Web Based Training (WBT): • No direct contact to teacher • Learning material usually stored on web servers • Accessible e.g. via the Internet by many potential students • Supporting autodidactic learning processes • Computer Based Training (CBT): • No direct contact to teacher • Learning material stored on discs, CD-Roms, DVDs • Distributable to many students via these media • Supporting autodidactic learning processes Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  12. E-Learning Demonstration WBT/CBT Professor Dr. Victor S. Izhutkinizhutkin@marsu.ruMari State University, Lenin Square 1,Yoshkar-Ola, Russia 424001Ph. +7 (8362) 41-19-00, fax +7 (8362) 45-45-81 Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  13. Blended Learning • Combination of different learning media and methods; Combination of “presence”-/”face-to-face”-learning and E-Learning elements • “Distance”-University Hagen,Germany Source: Wiepcke2006 Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  14. Video Conferencing and Training System Mr. Peter Wojtinnek PEWOTECH Business ConsultingAn der Markthalle 2250354 HürthGermany Telefon: +49 2233 945036Fax: +49 2233 945037Mobile: +49 173 8777780e-mail: info@pewotech.de ??? Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  15. Critical Success Factors E-Learning • Quality of learning-/training-modules • “intelligent” use of new media and IT • Infrastructure • Internet connection • Multimedia PCs • Efficient Learning-Management-Systems and tools • Tutorial Mentoring • Competence and reachability of tutor(s) • Discipline of Learners • Through independency of time and place  rigid time management necessary • Evaluation • Continuous evaluation of learning modules, mentoring, Learning-Management-System used  Quality Insurance of E-Learning Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  16. The End • A technology on its own does not automatically support or improve the learning process – it is strongly dependant to the personal motivation and effort of the individual such as to the social processes of knowledge achievement/development. (Hasebrook 2002) Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May

  17. Questions ??? Thank you very much... Dipl.-Wirt.-Inf. Goran Mihelcic - SfP-982063 Conference - Varna, 29-31 May
