  3. Dear Brethren, Allow me to clarify the previous month’s message by stating the following: Charity is the fruit of our labor; our labor is the “Great Work.” Yes, brethren, I know, I know, for many of you the concept of the “Great Work” may seem weird and perhaps even strange to you. And I am well aware of the fact that there are many of you who quite possibly feel it has no place in Masonry at all. And although I understand and respect your position on the matter, I would be lying to you if I said I agree because I don’t. So, what exactly is the "Great Work"? Well, as mentioned in the previous month's message, the "Great Work" is a progressive improvement of self, a process of self-transformation, achieved primarily through a dedicated study of the seven liberal arts and sciences and overcoming of the passions by means of a steadfast and willful application of cleansing, self-denial, diet, exercise, meditation, and prayer. Now, with that being said, the question becomes, "What exactly does the "Great Work" have to do with Freemasonry?" Well, the answer is quite simple... everything, but more specifically - the building of King Solomon's Temple. Case in point, consider the following excerpt: "Then King Solomon made preparation for his great work - the building of the house of the Lord;" Sound familiar? Ring a bell? Well, if it doesn't, it should especially if you have experienced the euphoria of being raised to the Sublime Degree of Ancient Craft Masonry. You see, brethren, metaphorically speaking, what the aforementioned excerpt is pointing to is the aim and goal, we, as Speculative Masons, are charged to aspire to and undertake within ourselves throughout our lives as members of this Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Men - the process of, "fitting ourselves, as living stones for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
