  1. Scientific Investigation or The Scientific Method

  2. Ask a Question • Ask a question you can answer by being able to TEST it • Based on prior knowledge or observations • Why do cats and dogs have hair?

  3. Do Research • Learn as much as you can about the experiment topic • Research may be needed before and after you decide what to do in your experiment • What is the function of hair? What does it look like?

  4. Form a Hypothesis • Suggest an idea that can be testedby an experiment • A hypothesis is a testable statement that can be supported or refuted(through experimentation or observations) • It has NO PREDETERMINED OUTCOME

  5. Hypothesis Tips • The question comes first – clearly identify the question you are intersted in studying • It is a statement, not a question. It is an educated, testable prediction about what will happen. • Make it clear and in simple language • Keep the variables in mind – variables are easy to measure • Make sure it is TESTABLE

  6. Good Vs. Bad GOOD BAD Ghosts are real. When there is less oxygen in the water, rainbow trout will have more lice.

  7. Design an Experiment • Identify the variables for your experiment • Figure out what equipment you need • Create a model if necessary

  8. Gather Data • Record your observations • This may include making measurements, drawings, or tables

  9. Analyze Data and Draw Conclusions • Examine data to see if the hypothesis is supported or rejected • Explain your results based on the data from your experiment

  10. Communicate Results • Share results with others and get feedback

  11. Identify Questions for Further Investigation • Can your experiment be improved? • Does it lead you to ask more questions?
