Course Learning Objectives • Define concepts of population health and distinguish them from the health of individuals • List determinants of population health • Describe biological and sociological mechanisms through which the determinants of population health operate • Analyze the role of medical care in producing population health • Prioritize necessary changes for the US if population health is a goal in the US

  3. Textbook and Reading List • Wilkinson, R. G. (2005). The Impact of Inequality: how to make sick societies healthier. New York, New Press. • SOUTH CAMPUS BOOKSTORE • Readings: from various electronic sources as well as textbook • COURSE FEE: $12.00 payable today or Friday

Credit Criteria • Come to 17 out of 19 lectures • SIGN UP SHEET initial box when you attend • Complete Quiz for next time • View Great Leveller (HSL DVD reserve) and write a response by April 7 • Write 1 page response to ONE of required readings for one of two class sessions every week due Monday session (1 page NO EMAILED RESPONSES) to be handed in) • Readings for sessions from text or other sources usually available electronically

Credit Criteria: TWO DISSEMINATION PROJECTS • Organize & convene a community meeting • Screen a segment of Unnatural Causes • Carry out a discussion of the video • Document your efforts, and critique them • Five pages, with pictures, recordings of the event • Can do in pairs, alternating taking lead for dissemination • Due May 2, and June 6
