Update on IPM Improvements and TeV Signal Consistency Issues - December 3, 2009
This report provides key insights into the ongoing improvements in the IPM design for the Main Injector and Booster as of December 3, 2009. Notable progress includes the initiation of design studies for a Mark-II system. Recent teaching sessions also revealed additional subtle issues concerning signal fluctuations, primarily attributed to clearing field charge times rather than vacuum inconsistencies. Fixes implemented on the QIE chip now ensure proper data conversion. Further investigations are underway regarding the electrostatic collection of ions and the behavior of space charge effects during beam extraction.

Flying Wire & IPM Update 12/3/2009
IPM Work • IPM Design Studies for a second Mark –II for Main Injector and Booster have begun. • Tev IPM teaching session degenerates into another onion layer being pealed away. We found two additional subtle issues.
Tev IPM Issue Fixes • The QIE chip is a piecewise linear device. The conversion to real numbers from the QIE data was originally done by the LabView code but this function was moved to the buffer board but the bit to do this inadvertently was not set. • The source of fluctuating signal levels and is not necessarily the vacuum. It’s mostly the Clearing Field charge time. We do see an occasional vacuum burst.

Flying Wire Status Main Injector Horizontal Operational Vertical has been replaced this morning. Waiting for beam. New lid with brand new feed through installed. Pumped down, let up, inspected, and pumped down again. Recycler: No Change Horizontal Operational Vertical has a binding feed-through. Problem is inside. Wire mounted on lid at E4R TEV: No Change All 3 wires are operational.
Booster IPM Notes Has Horizontal and Vertical Operational Electrostatic collection of Ions with 8KV Clearing Field Need to be Determined Looking at Magnetic containment for collection of Electrons as in the mark-II in MI. Probably will NOT use MI style electrostatic cans (Mig-Jen Has looked at 8 GeV beam and determined that some oscillations are not seen well electrostatically at Q102. Needs more study.) Why Space Charge effects at 8GeV dominate at extraction. Can use magnets to contain electrons. (Has been modeled by Alan Hahn and Andreas Jansson but should be updated.)
