Teacher Section Overview: Grade 4 Science: Waste and our World The purpose of these slides, activities and web pages are to enhance the students understanding of reusing, reducing and recycling.

Teaching Tips • This activity can be used individually in a computer lab or on a interactive whiteboard for a whole class activity. • For use in a computer lab headphones will need to be provided. • Internet access is required.

Specific Learner Expectations Science • 2. Identify and classify wastes that result from human activity. • 3. Describe alternative methods of disposal, and identify possible advantages and disadvantages of each. • 8. Identify alternative materials and processes that may decrease the amount of waste produced; e.g., reducing wastage of food, using both sides of a sheet of paper. • 9. Identify ways in which materials can be reused or recycled, including examples of things that the student has done. • 11. Identify actions that individuals and groups can take to minimize the production of wastes, to recycle or reuse wastes and to ensure the safe handling and disposal of wastes. • 12. Develop and implement a plan to reduce waste, and monitor what happens over a period of time.

Assessment for Learning • A variety assessment strategies have been incorporated into our virtual fieldtrip. • To check students understanding throughout the fieldtrip we have included 6 multiple choice questions. • We have also included a web quest investigation based on the content.

Assessment of Learning • Once students have completed the fieldtripthey will need to demonstrate their understanding by completing two tasks. • Task #1: - Students will need to develop an action plan for reusing, reducing, and recycling at home.Rubric • Task #2: - Student will create an Animoto video to demonstrate their comprehension of the 3 Rs. Reducing We should always reduce first. This is because if we reduce what we use and what we waste that means we are using less energy and fewer natural resources. If we have less waste, that also means that less land is going to be put aside for landfills.

Here is a list of ways you can help reduce waste: • 1. Put leftovers in reusable containers • 2. Pack your lunches in lunch bags or boxes instead of using paper bags. Also by using plastic containers instead of waxed paper, sandwich bags or aluminum foil you will be cutting back on waste, and your food won’t get squished! • 3. Use both sides of a piece of paper when you are doing your homework. This will make your paper last twice as long! • 4. Get a library card, by using it books and magazines can be used many times by the whole community, instead of just you. • 5. If you are buying a small item at a store, tell the cashier that you do not need a bag for it. • 6. Get a library card and use it. Buy in bulk, or get larger packages and then put the amount you need in reusable containers. This will save you money and on the amount of packaging that has to be used. 9. Reusing • Reusing an item refers to using it twice, or even many times, instead of just once. This helps by keeping it from becoming waste. • Some ideas for reuse include using glass or plastic jars after they're empty, or taking a cloth sack to the store when you shop (you don't need a bag, and you can use the sack again the next time). • Take along washable cups or travel mugs instead of disposables; a lot of restaurants and convenient stores will be glad to fill or refill your own mug. • Save your old clothes for a garage sale or give them to a charity. If they are ripped or torn and cannot be repaired, then use them for cleaning rags (cut off and save the buttons first). • Use a hand towel for drying your hands and dish cloth or sponge for wiping up spills. They can be cleaned and used again instead of being used once and thrown away.

Reusing When you do use disposables like plastic cups, plates, utensils, and plastic food storage bags, don't throw them away! Wash and reuse them! When you decide to replace something large and "reusable", be sure to donate the old one to charities. Most of the time the item can be repaired by someone, and then given to others, instead of being put into landfills. Hold a yard sale or give-away. And ask your neighbors to join in too -- this shares the work and increases the number of unused things that can find new homes and new uses Use cloth gift bags and stop ripping the paper off gifts! If you remove the wrapping paper carefully, you can use it again, and there's nothing wrong with doing just that! Don't forget to tell your mom or dad to use canvas or cloth bags when shopping so they don't need to make the choice between "paper or plastic."

Recycling • Finally, there is recycling. This is when used items are changed back into raw materials, to make new objects. • This helps save energy, our natural resources and stops our landfills from becoming full. • Things such as paper, notebook, playground equipment and carpet are all made from recycled material.

On your walk to school, you see an empty pop can on someone’s lawn. What do you do?a) Pick it up and put it in a recycling bin on the way to school b) Kick it down the street c) Throw it in a trash bin

Recycling • Did you know that just about anything in your home or school that you can’t reuse can be recycled into something else!? A t-shirt can be made from a recycled pop bottle, and one of your school text books might have started off as a phone book! • You should never throw anything away that could be recycled! • This list shows some of the items that should always be recycled (or even reused) • Aluminum cans (pop or soup cans) • Cardboard • Electronic equipment (like tv’s or computers) • Glass • Magazines and newspaper • Plastic bags • Tires
