  1. WHOI Glider Lab activities are supported by: The U.S. Office of Naval Research The Grayce B. Kerr Fund The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Endowed Fund for Innovative Research The Vetlesen Foundation Jim and Jane Orr The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution asap/muri workshop 30 June 2004 david m fratantoni physical oceanography department woods hole oceanographic institution

  2. technical contributions • fleet of at least five wrc 200 m gliders w/ctd, bb2f, par 30+ day endurance • glider operations and data system (gods) accessible to all participants and enhanced to accept control input from arbitrary external mission planners • small boat time: 3/9/9 shana rae, 3/3 tioga

  3. research goals • describe upwelling plume with sufficient measurement density and spatial distribution to facilitate model validation and data denial / optimal asset distribution experiments • observe and quantify hydrographic structures on scales approximating model grid resolution, both phenomenologically and statistically • refine real-time data quality assessment procedures and standardize across measurement platforms • explore ways in which novel adaptive sampling approaches can co-exist with more traditional observing methodologies, both with and without reference to an assimilating numerical model • linear sections feature tracking • moored arrays gradient climbing • drifters domain coverage metrics • ...

  4. needs • clear delineation between what can be done in simulation vs. what must be done in the ocean • early commitment to real-time control and data distribution protocols leaving time for development and testing, testing, testing... • collaboration on refinement and standardization of real-time data quality assessment procedures
