Main Characters • Jack- antagonist, longs for total power, represents human instinct of savagery • Ralph- Protagonist, 12 years old, represents human’s civilizing instinct, elected leader of the group • Piggy- whiny, intellectual, represents the scientific part of civilization • Simon- shy, sensitive, naturally good, finds the beauty and peace in nature
Main Themes • Savagery can occur when people are placed in extreme circumstances. • A human being is made up of many parts including a civilizing, scientific, intellectual, savage side, allowing them to be capable of many things. • People are capable of more than they may think they are. • Without the correct leadership, power struggles can occur. • Loss of innocence can occur when a person’s id becomes the prominent part of their personality.
A Human Psyche • Id- the repository of basic instincts and desires • Ego- experiences and reacts to the outside world and thus mediates between the primitive drives of the id and the demands of the social and physical environment • Superego- critical moralizing role
Connections to Year Long Question • Obstacles enable people to find their true selves, whether that be positive or negative. • Obstaclesshape the way people interact with each other and relate to how a situation turns out. • People, especially children, are easily manipulated and obstacles can often become too much pressure for a person, and they often cannot overcome the obstacle.
