  4. The STATE of PARÁ The state of Pará, one of the seven states of the North region of Brazil, is located in Amazon region covering a huge territory, with countless lakes, beaches and mountains. The beauties of Pará State split the attention of those who arrive to visit it. The state occupies a flat area surrounded by a complex watershed, where many inhabited islands can be found.

  5. The city of belém The city was founded by Portuguese colonizers in the 17th century and has a mixed Portuguese, Indian and African heritage, easily seen in the city architecture, food and culture. Today, approximately 1.5 million people live in Belém and the city offers all facilities found in other big Brazilian cities, such as hotels, banks, shopping areas and many other urban services. Beside all modern facilities found in a cosmopolitan city, Belém preserves its historical heritage, with old buildings, mansions, manors, and churches.

  6. The city of belém The region where the state of Pará is presently located was invaded several times since the beginning of the 16th century by the Dutch and the British in search of urucum, guarana and pepper seeds. The Portuguese occupation was consolidated in 1616, when the Presepio Fort, which was later called the Forte Castle, was built in the Guajara bay, originating the city of Belém Two of its most important attractions are the Municipal Market (meat) and the Iron Market (fish), located on the banks of the Guajara Bay. Near these markets, in the same complex, the Ver-o-Peso port-fair is located, close to the site where the city was born. At the Ver-o-Peso, which has become the postcard of Belém, colours, odours and flavours mix in a rich and original landscape.

  8. CURIOSITIES ABOUT belém Belém is known as “The City of Mango Trees” because of the great number of mango trees that offer their shade to cool down the hot and humid equatorial climate. Belém is also known as “the Brazilian Paris”. All the charm of the “La Belle Epoque” from the rubber boom was cultivated in buildings such the Bologna Palace, an important landmark of the city. During the Nineetenth century, the upper class imported habits, clothes and culture from Europe.

  9. THE PARAENSE PARLANCE “Pai d’égua!!” is a typical slang for paraense (people from Pará) which is very much used to define something damned good, excellent. But the word ‘égua’ alone, which became its own generic exclamation, also serves for bad things. If someone tumbles down the stairs or if you tell a belemense (people from Belém) some bad news, you’ll certainly hear them say ‘Ééégua!’. Paraense people have a nickname – everyone who was born in Pará is called papachibé. Papa means enjoy eating and Chibé means farinha (cassava flour) mixed with water - something the local population loves to eat. It has an indigenous origin. Chibé

  10. PARAENSE tastesandflavours You will find a diversity of tastes and flavours. Local specialities such as pato no tucupi (duck in tucupi sauce), tacacá, maniçoba, moqueca, caruru, and great variety of local fishes. Tucupi is prepared with manioc root and jambu. Jambu leaf has an undescriptive taste, it is a little bit spicy and has a kind of anestesic effect on your mouth. The specialized ice creams of the Amazon are one of Belem's treats. Made from a variety of fruits, they are delicious and exotic and not to be missed. There are numerous flavours, mostly made from fruits without English names: cupuaçu, bacuri, açai, tapioca, castanha-do-Pará, graviola.
