  4. Hermaphrodite • An organism with both male and female reproductive structures • Ex. earthworm

  5. Fertilization • Forms zygote- • Fertilized egg (diploid cell)

  6. Conditions for Fertilization • 1. Proper timing • Must have egg & sperm present at same time. • Ex. mating seasons, courtship rituals • 2. Protection • By body • Large number of gametes • Allows gametes to survive

  7. Conditions for Fertilization • 3. Pathway • Sperm need open path to reach egg • Water medium or reproductive tract • 4. Liquid medium • Sperm need medium to swim • Water medium or produced by organism

  8. External Fertilization • Outside the organism • Must be in water • Ex. some fish, amphibians

  9. Internal Fertilization • Inside the organism • Required for land animals • Some water animals

  10. External Development • Development of zygote outside body • Birds, reptiles, amphibians

  11. Internal Development • Development within the organism • Offspring born alive • Ex. mammals

  12. Parthenogenesis • Unfertilized egg develops into a new organism • Ex. drone bees, aphids
